Subject: Cross Post need Reference help to stop slander

Hi All, I just found out that a local hospital is taking me off its

referral list because I refer to Bowen practitioner who works on the

babies I see who have significant structural issues that are complicating

breastfeeding (as well as causing them pain, discomfort, torticollis, colic,

etc…). The reason stated (allegedly) is because my practice (nor my

Bowen therapists) is evidence based. This information came to me in a roundabout way, but with

the details I have, I have a strong suspicion of WHO started it, I just don’t

have proof – yet. It was May of this year that my client was told

this slanderous comment: Ped told mom I was a scam artist and I tell EVERY

mom I see that her baby has tight muscles and a tongue tie. The Ped told

her specifically to NOT see ME. Yet, mom saw me anyway based on

recommendations from several others, and baby actually did have severely tight

muscles (thanks to birth trauma) and a significant tongue tie – both issues

were missed by hospital LC and – yup – the Dr. because it

is not their specialty. Mom subsequently changed Peds due to the Drs

unprofessional comments. Mom was NOT impressed. That baby is doing

fine now and mom is now my intern. It was in May that this alleged email was sent out

requesting all providers (in this system) to stop referring to me. NEVER

has anyone from that Hosp. System called me to ask any questions about what I

do and why, and why do I refer babies out for treatment. Never.

Rather, it seems they would prefer to slander my name. Or would it now be

libel since it is allegedly in writing? Hmmm… At any rate, I am in the process of tracking down that email

so that I can know exactly what was said and who sent it. I will be

utilizing a lawyer in my endeavors as the hospital needs to know that slander/libel

is not OK. While that research is going on I need to develop a list of

references, up to date and as evidence based (you know I am really sick to

death of that term) as possible to show them that I am actually practicing not

only properly, but in the best interests of the child as well as

ethically. My Bowen practitioner is speaking with her atty and her board

of directors and we will be presenting a United Front on this issue. In

But don’t talk crap about me and spread rumors or lies about me…that’s

fighting my own kind on this as well. It is time that I make a stand and

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay--this is my pissy reply, based on an experience I prefer not to think

about:

Twelve years ago, when I was just about the only LC I knew referring to

chiropractors anywhere, Hartford Hospital took me off their referral list. The

hospital-based LC (for whom I have adjectives that define why I am disgusted by

the fast-track certification process for some professions) told me that they

were going to do so if I did not stop, which I said I would absolutely not. Then

they sent a letter about a week later, claiming there had been a complaint about

me to justify their actions (it was from someone I never saw who called on

Christmas eve and never scheduled an appt--demanded help on the phone then and

there, which I could not do). Of course, now all the other LCs have benefitted

from my refusal to back down and just about everyone now makes referrals, but it

decimated my practice for a long time.

It especially sucks when other IBCLCs play the game. I decided to walk away and

make my own game with my own rules, but it was very hard. People like to benefit

from your courage, but they don't always want to stand there while you're taking

the fire. I think it's one reason why I have so little respect for the structure

of this profession--the lack of support, especially for PPLCs and for those of

us who take risks and pioneer for the sake of moms and babies.

I hope you fare better, given the years of clinical evidence by now supporting

your practice methods.

– thank you for sharing your story. I hear

you…I really hear you. Yes I feel like the ‘pioneer’ that

everyone else gets to have an easier ride because of. I haven’t heard of

anyone else in my area dealing with the nonsense I have over the past several

years that I have been referring out to chiro’s, CST or Bowen…and I

have had a lot of Docs and LC’s get mad at me for referring babies for

treatment. I still don’t understand why. I am helping babies and

mommies. Isn’t that what we are here to do???

Maybe I am just stupid and should understand why people have

thought I was over-referring and stepping outside my scope of practice by not only

mentioning that baby had tight muscles but for referring to a particular

practitioner for assistance. (yes I was told this by an LC (or few) here in

town – many times) Maybe I am stupid and should remember my place: Dr =

God and we never ever, ever do or say anything that will remind Dr they are NOT

God and do NOT know it all. Maybe I am stupid and should have been coddling

these Drs all these years and kissing ass, and spending inordinate amounts of

time talking with them and sending them all sorts of information about their

patients – oh wait – tried that - for years and it got me nowhere

and with moms changing Peds like they change socks (because the Peds blew them

off repeatedly), I got tired of wasting my time and energy on them and focused

it all on my clients. Maybe I am just stupid and don’t know how to play

the ‘game’. Oh wait – I do know how to play the damn game

and I simply refuse to play anymore. I have better things to do with my time –

like, you know – take care of my clients! I am sick to death of playing

nicey nice with these people who don’t get it and don’t want to. And

I am tired of Drs who cannot be bothered to pick up the phone and call me when

they don’t understand why I refer for certain treatments. No –

they’d rather badmouth me and slander me to clients (who come to me

anyway and get the help they need) and make themselves look stupid. Am I

pissy about this today?? Absolutely. Dealing with another Dr who is

practicing seriously negligent medicine and I am spending a LOT of time

cleaning up her mess in the way of supporting a mom I have no way to help other

than to encourage her to use her post-partum hormones and get BITCHY and demand

help. It’s been a week already and it is only Tuesday -sigh.

As it stands now I have had many e-mails of support from

this list as well as LN and one other…and they are greatly appreciated!

But I have received NO references, links to articles, books, etc that show my

referrals are proper and evidence based. None. And I really need them. I am

frustrated. I hear that they are out there…but I don’t know where

to find them and I am looking but my time is limited due to the fact that I

have 8 moms in really messed up situations needing a LOT of time on the phone

and in person support. My last 3 calls last night came after 9pm…they

were in tears. I heard that Alison Hazelbaker has a list…anyone have a

copy they can send me? Anyone have anything that can help? I need info on

tongue-tie and structural issues – CST, Chiro, anything related to how

muscle structure can negatively impact breastfeeding and why it is important to

refer to appropriate care providers. If you have info, please send it my way –

I will build a database of references and share it with everyone.

Help??

Thank you!

Jaye,I am always honored to be associated with colleagues that “fight the good fight”. IBCLCs are supposed to the experts on breastfeeding and doing everything in our power to support a mom and baby to do just that is exactly our scope of practice!Let me know offline if there’s any info I can send you way that you were requested. My web site resource page is in no way comprehensive but if you can use any links off of it, feel free: http://www.lunalactation.com/Articles.htmI am not sure what list of Alison’s you were looking for. If it is one on tongue tie professionals, that list has yet to be typed up to my knowledge.Hang in there, sister! Cole
