Hi nadja,

does the mother practice skin to skin? can she put milk on breast so baby can lick, can you help her with a SNS , either bought or home made. It sounds like the baby sees nipple and has associated with difficulties so she refuses. I think the aim is to help baby assiciate nipple with positive feelings, being held, abundance of milk, soothing. Sorry if you might have mentioned this in other emails. I am new to group.

Subject: Non-latching baby post-frenotomy

Hello all,I thank those of you who responded to my previous post--privately and publicly. I've seen the baby/mom dyad, who hadn't attempted latching since week 2 three times now. Baby will be 11 weeks tomorrow; we have an appointment for posterior tongue-tie evaluation with Dr. in Colton, CA, who performed the laser procedure on my 8 year old son's posterior t-t.My question is how can I best facilitate post-frenotomy when baby becomes frustrated and miserable at breast? Each time I've visited for 1-1/2 hours at a time, baby can't latch, and immediately starts to cry. She will do this even if we give her supplement by bottle first.I realize this is a "marathon, not a sprint," to quote Ann , IBCLC. I am wondering what would be most useful. I have done a search on this list and read everything I found, and am not sure if giving bottle first would be best or letting baby do her usual "telling us about it"?Nadja Catano

Thank you for your responses. I had sent the mom and baby in for CST yesterday;

today she was beaming when she greeted me, saying her baby had spontaneously

latched onto the breast--twice last night! She was 11 weeks today, and hadn't

been to breast since week 2. Mom attributed it to reawakening her responses by

having her STS on mom's chest, and allowing her to develop more pleasant

associations at breast.

When we saw Dr , he did not agree with the posterior tongue-tie; I think

the CST really released a lot of unresolved stuff in this baby. Mom reported

that baby had screamed when the CSTherapist manipulated her jaw area and around

the top of her head (where she had been stuck for some time partly out of mom,

during labor--no vacuum extraction or forceps). It was a 75 minute CST session.

Dr. performed a frenotomy on her lip tie which was very tight, and we went

in the next room, where baby latched on beautifully!

As an aside--mom loved the dental chair for laid-back nursing; we stayed there

some time, allowing baby to relax. I really appreciated how Dr. had mom

hold baby facing out, (so she was in contact with mom the entire time) as an

assistant helped hold baby's head steady. I helped in any way I could--holding

baby's legs steady, moving her hand away from her face.

What a contrast with the client--who happens to have moved downstairs from this

client and referred this mom to me--whose baby's lip tie was done under GA.
