Guest guest
,I tell moms that the tongue tie is not just a breastfeeding issue but a life long health issue. I can tell a tongue tie in adults just by listening to them speak and watching their mouths and tongue. I think there is way more than we know. The stats are the TT that we catch. I think Jay Leno is very very tongue tied. Listen to him sometime and look at his jaw and facial development. LOL My family thinks I have jumped off the deep end when it comes to TT.My 5 year old grandson has a posterior tongue tie as does his dad. They refused to clip it because dad is doing fine and his is not clipped. This little peanut now has major eating problems and I can see him going into a eating disorder. He is constantly in trouble about something to do with his eating. He hates to eat. But they do not see the connection and will not I repeat will not listen to me. This Nana has to keep her mouth shut. It breaks my heart watching him struggle. I would get a tt clipped at any age because it does not get better.Happy New Year,Shari I have two sons with posteriors (both breastfed for several years) who now need a lot of orthodontia for their very high and narrow palates and crowded teeth. They speak clearly, but not as precisely as my son who has a tongue with more range of motion. They both snore and my older son does not. I have met many, many adults whom I believe to have posterior tongue-ties who do not have clear speech and have dental and other problems. This is something that needs to be researched. My feeling is that it does affect more than just breastfeeding and I would love to know what a study would show. Anyone out there who could do such a stucy? >I just want to mention that my opinion until I see otherwise is that >the posteriors probably only affect BF- my son had one that was >clipped 3 times- he never BF- and I expected all sorts of problems >with solids, etc- but so far, all was perfect. He is only 2 now, >but talking beautifully also. Guest guest
Thanks so much ! Subject: Re: Tongue-ties To: Date: Thursday, December 30, 2010, 11:16 AM Hi , just a couple of edits to your Washington contacts: Isabella Knox: Maternity & Infant Care Clinic at UWMC. Schedule by calling her on her cell phone: . email is iknox@... Ann O'Hara - office line to schedule, she doesn't schedule via her cell anymore. 7337 35th Avenue NE while I love Dr. O'Hara and she is a good friend, at this point, I prefer Dr. Knox for posterior TT. Dr. O'Hara spends hours with the family and can help with all aspects of breastfeeding, Dr. Knox is a neonatologist and doesn't do latch/position/full-term baby/normal breastfeeding stuff. Dr. Knox can often get patients in sooner than Dr. O'Hara can. thanks, Healy Seattle, WA
Guest guest
I couldn't agree more Shari. In fact, I watched a CBS Morning Show this morning from earlier this month on my DVR and they were doing a segment on Dick Van Dyke. Darned if he isn't posterior tongue-tied! I never would have known, but it was clear as a bell. My hubby sees them as clearly as I do now and is often the one to point them out to me. He's a big believer and we would have had our boys cut when they were babies if we'd known. Now they adamantly refuse and we don't feel we should force them. Thankfully, they happily pose for pictures that I use in my presentations. I'm so sorry about your grandson. Guest guest
Thank you , I hope he decides to have the tt clipped. He may not even know he has a tt. Mum is the word about that around them. Her second did not have a tt. The first one brfd all the time and I mean all the time for 3 years. She told me she was not out of pain for the first 8 months. Her second baby had no tt. and nursed normal every few hours. It took 3 years for them to conceive baby number 2. They thought it would take as long the 3rd time but low and behold they conceived when he was 13 months old. I never thought about it but the diff. was the amount of time at breast. The second was of course much more efficient at breast so did not need to brfd as often. So having a tt baby may be a better birth control. LOL Now she is due with baby number 3 any day. we will wait and see about the tt... Shari I couldn't agree more Shari. Guest guest
" I tell moms that the tongue tie is not just a breastfeeding issue but a life long health issue. " Exactly, Shari! Most of the time when I point out potential dental issues, etc the parents can relate (especially ones that had orthodontia to pull together those upper teeth spaced by a restrictive maxillary labial frenum). Carmen's site does a great job of addressing issues caused by unresolved tongue tie. I have even had some tongue tied parents decide to have their own frenula released after learning that many of their own issues (neck tension, detnal issues, sleep apnea, indigestion, etc) may be caused by the restrictions. A few of our allied LCs have done the same! Cole
Guest guest
asks if anyone recommends stretching after frenotomy. I absolutely do. It does help tremendously when done properly and regularly. I recommend and teach the 2 fingertips on either side of the ‘frenulum’ and push gently straight back and hold for a count of 2, and also lateralization exercises, tongue extension exercises and elevation – all from Genna’s book. J It’s a damn fine book! I have one mom – a really odd case – who did not do the stretching I taught her to do. Guess what? That frenulum reattached. Initially it was one of the tightest I had ever felt. It was well clipped the first time. Well, the mom did not listen to my recommendation to get it clipped again (by the same guy who does a great job!) and instead tried stretching exercises suggested to her by a bodywork practitioner I typically adore who was seeing the baby for structural issues related to a birth injury. 3 wks she suffered in pain while trying (off and on) to stretch the frenulum. Of course it didn’t work. I did a recheck and it was almost as tight as the first time and I sat her down and said ‘Look – this stretching is not going to work in my professional opinion. I specialize in tongue-ties and I cannot help you get this any better without this being clipped again. Please reconsider.’ Actually I probably told her that several times during that 3 wk period. She reconsidered and got it re-clipped. Dr did an excellent job! He said he has never seen a frenulum reattach like that. Tight, fibrous – tough. Again I re-taught mom stretching exercises and guess what? She didn’t not do them as directed. Guess what? Frenulum has reattached! Not as tight as before – but I swear it needs to be clipped again! Now, I think that had mom done the exercises regularly and as directed she would not likely be having this issue or at least not as bad…but then again, baby has other structural issues that are not resolving as quickly because she isn’t doing his other exercises either…always some excuse or reason as to why things only get done 1-2 times per day (if she is lucky) vs the 5-8 times per day directed… Just my thoughts… Jaye Simpson, IBCLC, CIIM Breastfeeding Network Sacramento, CA www.breastfeedingnetwork.net

Guest guest
Actually, Dr Kotlow does recommend pushing the tongue upwards and backwards to keep the surgical site from reattaching. He has pictures at his website that I send to my patients. http://kiddsteeth.com/articles/breastfeedingdrkotlowtx.pdf Look at page 16. He says to swipe side to side. Dr. says to push in against the wound and lift the tongue up. I find that Dr. 's method offers a better stretch, which seems logically to be more likely to prevent adhesions. I truly wish these methods could be objectively researched so that we have some evidence and data to back up our recommendations. In time hopefully they will be. Guest guest
The local family practice/breastfeeding medicine doctor trained with Dr. and she always recommends stretching. I have some moms report that the baby won't tolerate both the stretching exercises and the exercises from Genna, so then I tell the mother to do the stretching exercises for 4-5 days to help prevent the frenulum from healing back together, and then start the other exercises after the frenulum clipping has healed. Dee KassingAlso, are any of you recommending stretching after the clipping? Dr. Jim has been recommending this and I really think it improves outcomes, but I wonder if anyone else is recommending it?
