You need to check with the state dept where you register you motor vehicle.

Usually there is a form that you make out and have completed by your doctor.

[ ] Temporary Handicapped card?

I was wondering if anyone has a temporary handicapped card that they

can hang in their car dash to use handicap parking when they need

it. I certainly don't need to use handicapped parking all the time,

but there are times that walking from a distance is a real problem.

That proved to be the case at a conference I attended last weekend

at a big university. The venues were spread all over the campus,

and the parking was a long walk from any of them. They did have a

shuttle bus service, but after trying that briefly on the first day,

I found that this was even worse than driving/parking/walking. The

wait for shuttle busses was long, it was very hot and humid, and

there was no plae to sit while waiting for the bus. As a result, I

stayed mostly in the venues that were at least REASONABLY close to a

parking lot, meaning that there were two areas of the conference

that was I never even able to visit at all.

While hoofing all over the place, I noticed that there were unused

handicapped spaces right beside every one of these buildings. It

would have been SO much easier on me if I had been able to use this

parking.

Is it possible to get a placard if you are only disabled part of the

time or in certain circumstances? Does anyone know how you go about

it?

My 84 year old sister has a handicapped card on her car. She does not always

use the handicapped spaces, just the times she really needs to. When you have

one you don't have to use a handicapped space. The physical features of the

permit does not matter. It can be on a tag or one to hang on your mirror. A

portable one is good if you don't always use the same car.

I had a temp handicap card a few years ago when I broke my leg. I was still

working at the time. The doctor still has to fill out paperwork from DMV and

then you have to send in a check for payment . Its like 2 dollars. A temp card

is only good for a few months 6 I think. Since the procedure is the same for a

permament card, I would just go ahead and ask the doctor about a permanent card

( cost is the same) and just use it at your discretion. A permanent card is

good for several years. I have a permanent card now, one of the best things I

ever did. But then I understand in some states Like Florida is is more difficult

to get a handicap sticker. Here in WI. it is pretty easy to get one. It is

especially nice to have in the winter, when it is icy out. I don't really care

if people look at me funny when I park in a handicap spot, because of my age. If

someone really stares I tell them to take a picture it will last longer!

Going grocery or any other shopping makes me tired enough without having to

walk a mile to the car. Some days even the distance to a handicap spot seem to

far. in WI

In New York, a temporary permit (red) is for 6 months. I had a temp and

just had it replaced with the blue one which is now good for 5 years. It's

a form issued by the DMV and depending on where you live in the state, is

filed in different places. Mine went to the county office for the disabled.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I'll talk to the doctor about

it the next time I see her. I just feel kind of funny about it,

because I was only dx'd in Jan., and I'm still HOPING that we find a

med combination that gets me back close to normal. OTOH, it's been 7

months now, and since my hips and feet are the worst, walking long

distances is harder on me than anything else. (and pavement seems to

be the worst!)

Federal law dictates that we have a temporary (red) or permanent (blue)

handicap card and/or a handicap license plate for the permanently disabled.

The card must be displayed by hanging it on the rear view mirror or lying on

the dashboard with your DL# and expiration date visible. I've recently heard

about red or blue parking spaces to be used by those with the matching card,

but the noise has diminished for some reason.

When a number of us riding motorcycles wanted handicap privileges, the

public was up in arms for a while. The state didn't even have a plate

designed for us when the law was finally passed, so they suggested we put

the card where it was visible, the same as a car. How would you like to put

your card on the hood of your car and walk off to do some shopping? It took

me 3 months but I did get a plate designed and manufactured. I even had to

tell my county auto registration how many plates to order. They had no clue!

Soon after we got the plates in, a policeman tried to confiscate the plate

from a friend, saying it was a forgery! Change isn't always good.

Hi :

I have one of those cards and, boy, does it come in

handy some days! I went to the DMV and got the

application for the handicapped parking card and/or

license plate, and took it to my doctor to be filled

out. She had no trouble doing this. This was about 4

years into the RA, and I was having more trouble

getting around, so she was fine when I asked if I

could get one. I have had one since then, and simply

get it renewed every two years automatically. Mine is

permanant handicapped placard. Best of luck - it will

help you when you have to walk a long distance to

where you want to go, or have to do a lot of walking

once you get inside such as malls, etc. Just get

ready for strange looks from some people since we

" look normal " lol.

I also have one of these. It is a permanent one because as my doc said, I will

always have RA, OA, Fibro, and a very bad back. I don't use it all of the time,

just when I need to. And yes I get those looks all of the time. I am overweight

also, so I feel like people are looking at me thinking that being overweight is

not a handicap that it is something that is my fault. The thing is I am on at

least 15 meds and I am in so much pain that I can't exercise, so how am I

supposed to lose it? Oh, well I am rambling now. It is something I think anyone

with RA needs, especially if you don't have anyone to go places for you or with

you on the bad days.

Those handicapped stalls aren't meant to be reserved only for people with a

disability; the

stores just need to provide them for when someone with a wheelchair or

disability needs

to use the restroom. I always use them, cause they're bigger and more

comfortable than

the tiny stalls. I would never jump into one in front of someone with a handicap

(or cut

someone else off , for that matter, whether or not their handicap was visible).

So if they give you dirty looks, tell 'em to get a life and worry about the more

serious

matters in this world.

Absolutely true, can you imagine a line of women " waiting " in a restroom and

leaving a handicap stall empty? How ludicrous. I use them only if there is

nothing else available, only because I don't like them. Being short is a

handicap in itself when it comes to those accomodations. Ha, ha!
