When to test peak - flow?

I bought a cheap peak-flow meter today @ CVS... just to see his

numbers. Should I test before breathing treatments, after treatment or

both??

I know... these are all questions I should be asking our

pediatrician... and I will, it's just that our doctors office is

IMPOSSIBLE...which is part of why Thursday's visit WAS going to be our

LAST visit to this ped... but now that we're working with this... I

hate to go search out a new ped, until we have it undercontrol...

definitely both! and write the numbers down EVERY TIME..that way you can tell how the treatments are helping and if he's improving over time. take the numbers to your doctor too :) if he's good he'll like to make a copy :) keep a record of everything, like the day/time/ trigger if you can...it will help you in the future big time! best! keep us informed! shefymadre2sirstinksalot wrote: I bought a cheap peak-flow meter today @ CVS... just to see his numbers. Thank you!! I'm trying to figure all this out NOW so that I have something to arm myself with when we go back to the doctors. I had already decided that unless told differently I would test before and after.

So far today he's had 2 breathing treatments with the peak flow 125/140 and 140/150. So it definitely appears that the treatments are helping.

Now... To just figure out the triggers. That I fear will be the hard part, as I send him to school @ 7:00 in the morning and pick him up from the neighbor (who picks him up from after school) around 7:00 in the evening! But I'm writing everything down... And will be asking teachers/ after school caregivers/ and neighbors to help as well...

Peak flows should be done everyday at about the same time before

bronchodilator treatments. Then you write the numbers down in your

diary. I you want to do them again after the treatment, you can.

You should do the peak flow 3 times and write down the BEST of the

three.

My doctor told me that the treatments are working properly if there's an increase of over 20 points on the peakflow meter. You might be using a different kind though..I'm not sure...Take the numbers to your doctor and see what he says. Definitely get the help from everyone you can! I know it must be hard working and having him go to school like this. Try to keep his chest warm, like wear a lot of layers and have him avoid cold foods and snacks which cause even more constriction than there is! Somone from this group, recommended rubbing pure mustard oil on the back and front, I guess it helps to loosen the mucus...It helps me when I feel wheezy/tight chested. Keep at it! This may be true but the goal is not to have a decrease in the first

place. Avoid triggers and take preventive medications and maybe

there wont be a decrease in peak flow.
