Guest guest
A very good try Kishore. You attempted 7 questions; you got 4 completely correct. I'm amazed you didn't get questions 4, 6 and 10. They are the easier ones of the lot. Try them too. And yes, I'll send the answers on Wednesday evening. Anshu Re: InQUIZitive about words > > 1. Which is the longest word in any English dictionary? Guest guest
Here are my answers to Anshu's English words quiz: 1. Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis: I have never diagnosed this 45-alphabet-long disease because I have no idea what it means! 2. The most commonly misspelled words in English language! 3. Etymologically, these words owe their origin to Hindi or Sanskrit. Shampoo, for example is derived from champi; similarly the word herpes comes from Sanskrit, serp (snake)! Hence the disease, Herpes is identified as " Nagin " in Marathi. 4. Widower - the masculine form takes a suffix " er " and gets longer than the feminine form (widow). 5. These words, eponyms, were originally used and created as proprietary trademarks or brand names. Because the public used them so commonly, the brand names became synonymous with the common names of the product. For example, we should not say, " Please Xerox two copies " , because " Xerox " is a brand of a photocopy machine. 6. ? Couldn't get the simple one! 7. This sentence contains the root " ough " which can be pronounced in nine different ways! 8. These words belong to names of people. For example, Louis Antoine de Bougainville, C. Boycott, Rudolf Diesel, Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, Theodore Roosevelt (Teddy Bear). 9. United Arab Emirates 10. These are auto antonyms- they have multiple, and often contradictory meanings. For example, cleave can mean to stick together as well as to break, sanction can mean " to endorse " or to " take punitive action " . BONUS: The five boxing wizards jump quickly.
