Re: Questions #1 Nebulizer treatment

I have never heard of that side effect from Xopenex. Are you on

other new medications too? Antibiotics do that to me.

The neb treatments should take around 20-30 minutes if you are using

a portable nebulizer such as a pulmoaid. The portable machines run

at about 5 liters per minute. If you have an oxygen or air tank, or

an oxygen concentrator with a flow meter on it, you can turn up the

flow to 8 liters per minute. I wouldn't go any higher then that.

Your neb treatment should be done when the medication starts

to " sputter " . You can tap the cup or shake the cup to help the

liquid on the side of the cup to drain down to the bottom for

nebulization. If you want to do your treatment until the cup is

mostly dry, it will take 45 minutes or longer.

Can you share with us more about your condition such as your

diagnosis, respiratory medications and what town/city you are from?

I am on Advair 500 two times a day, Singulair at night, Astilin, allergy shots for over 15 yrs., Xopenex HFA(rescue inhaler) and now on the nebulizer treatments 3 x's a day am not on oxygen of any kind.

I will hear the sputtering, but have a lot of condensation and I tap the cup the med is in and when I tap the condensation, the cup fills up with cloudy liquid, this after using the treatment for 10 to 15 minutes. I have another cup that is different with different mouthpiece and when I use these mouthpiece parts the vial of med I put into the resovair is completely used up with no condensation.

I have been going to an allergist/immunologist for 20 yrs with the same doctor. And got very ill with a respiratory infection in the early spring of last year and was put on heavy steroids treatments and one dose of antibiotics. It took me over two months to get over the infection and have had a very hard time with this doctor getting a nebulizer for home treatment.

I also have COPD (non-smoker). When I got over this infection, I was put on Singulair and stopped the allergy shots. For 7 months I was asthma free until Sept 16 of last year and had been cleaning house with mask, covering my clothes and removing them as soon as finishing my housework and rinsing off my hair, and was fine then the next morning I went into the washroom to wash clothes and all of a sudden I was gasping for breath. Saw the doctor and he put me on a week's course of steroids and got a handicapped card and haven't been the same since. I can't walk without gasping for breath, I have to use an electric store chair.

The doctor says that he has used the max of meds on me and acted like he didn't know what else to do. I asked about going to a pulmo doctor and he said he would treat me with the same meds that he has me on and didn't need to see a specialist.

I am in a quandry as to what to persue next and what to do. Oh, I had a regular chest x-ray in Dec of 2005 and it was normal. This allergist/doctor.

I live in San , TX

It might be worth getting a second opinion. You sound frustrated

with your Dr...he may be giving perfectly good advice, but a 2nd

opinion might do more - or confirm you are getting good advice. I

would expect in a city the size of San you would have

several to pick from.

I haven't had to do it for asthma, but when I was considering back

surgery. Turned out I stayed with my original dr (4 surgeries

later) but it was reasurring to get anothers opinion.

I just received my first xopenex nebulizer treatment at the emergency room the other night as well as a steroid shot. I had been exposed to a heavy dose of industrial strength deodorizer/sanitizer at work and was in pretty bad shape. I don't know if it was the xopenex or the prednisone but I left the ER feeling better than I have in some time. I was breathing free and easy and it was extraordinary. I had none of the side effects that you described.

Medications that I'm on regularly are Advair 5oo/50, Singulair and Albuterol.
