Guest guest
I agree that it is difficult to tell. I was questioning myself at one ponit and decided to do an experiment, hoping to improve my health and ability to exercise. I rode my bike as far as I could (without pushing too far) almost every day for two months. I always stopped between 2.5 and 3 miles. If the issue were simply being out of shape, I would think I would have improved. I have friends who ride their bike across Iowa every year and I cannot build up to ride between my town and the next, a few cornfields away. After that I had a cardio-pulmonary test, the one I have mentioned before on this list, where the pulmonary specialist said that I was like the basketball player who drops dead on the court. I am going to Curves 5 times a week now (which has provided no visible improvement, but then I know I am doing a program that should keep help me be reasonably healthy) and still get winded walking from the store to the parking lot with a bag of groceries, for example. So, I, too have had problems knowing whether it is just that I am out of shape, but am now convinced that is not the problem. Best wishes. --dawn > Does anyone know how you can tell if shortness of breath while > exercising is from being out of shape or from asthma? Guest guest
I don't know but you should go to the doctor and tell him and he can test you or give you an inhaler. I wouldn't wait. Char Exercise Induced Asthma Does anyone know how you can tell if shortness of breath while exercising is from being out of shape or from asthma? It feels the same to me...thanks
Guest guest
I am far from being an expert but this is what I noticed on myself (I have an allergic asthma): the main indicator for me is the recovering period: usually after effort in approximative 3-5 minutes you should recover and breathe normally. If it takes longer than that I know that I am in the beginning / middle of an asthma crisis. Anyway, you should start with simple exercises like walking from A to B and after that increasing the difficulty (increasing speed & distance) to regain your phisical strength, of course if your health / physician allows it. I hope this helps. hockeyplayersgal wrote: Does anyone know how you can tell if shortness of breath while exercising is from being out of shape or from asthma? Guest guest
I thought I was out of shape my entire life! I only knew after I was tested by spirometry and albuterol and spirometry again (all in the same visit). I don’t remember how to read the numbers, but one is more indicative of exertion or exercise induced asthma. If it is being out of shape, then you should improve by exercising. Guest guest
I walk 3 miles most days of the week. It is harder when it's cold. I have noticed I have alot of trouble breathing when I ride my bike. Seems I shouldn't be too out of shape from the walking, but who knows. I think tommorrow I will use my albuteral B4 i exercise. If I have less trouble then I'll know it's from my asthma . If it's the same then I'll know I need to work harder. Sound plausable?
Guest guest
That might sound medically reasonable, but from my own experience, there is nothing among all of the inhalers I have used that has made much of a dent in my exercise. These have helped control my non-EIA, the way I see it, but none of these really help me exercise much more than not using them. They give tiny gains, not enough worth taking them for (except when normal asthma flares up), from my perspective. That is just my two cents, but I think that there are many variants of this disease and it is my EIA that has resisted all treatment. The best thing I have done for it is to ensure I breath in only through my nose (at all times and especially when exercising). --dawn > I walk 3 miles most days of the week. Guest guest
well im not so sure, about everyone and if and how many similarities there are...but it seems that ppl with respiratory problems such as asthma, after exercising won't recover immediately, whereas other people just need to walk it off and cool down and they're fine...meanwhile those of us with asthma or other respiratory illnesses will still be feeling out of breath for hours after the bike riding is over.char from Spokane wa wrote: I don't know but you should go to the doctor and tell him and he can test you or give you an inhaler. Guest guest
you said, "...if its the same then I'll know I need to work harder..." You have to be careful with that type of thinking, because asthma and other respiratory "patients" have a lot of extra stresses on your heart and lungs already, if you push it to much you could push your body beyond its ability to function, and ending up triggering something a lot worse than everyday asthma, such as damage to heart, etc. Also it was interesting that I posted without looking ahead at what others had said about recovery time from exercise with asthma and we ended up posting very similar thoughts, which is very interesting to me because its fascinating that we are going through a lot similar experiences and sort of confirming what I feel out through my own experiences, which I sometimes wonder about. Sometimes its sort of interesting to get confirmation from others about the types of symptoms that happen in asthma, as its sort of hard to gather family support behind asthma, and sometimes I wonder what to tell them. They sometimes ask me how I'm feeling or what my symptoms are and sometimes i get so desensitized to just feeling so much difficulty breathing that I really don't even know where to begin telling them about the symptoms and I feel like, I wonder if they're believing how bad it is anyway. I try to tell them about symptoms I'm going through and their like half listening. They'll try to listen but think its just temporary and don't get a realistic idea of how awful this feels. I feel that I am struggling for breathe every minute of everyday and they don't get it.hockeyplayersgal wrote: I walk 3 miles most days of the week. It is harder when it's cold.
