Guest guest
As promised here are the answers. The only people who attempted this quiz were Ameet and Kishore. And between the two of them they got most of the real filmi questions correct. Congratulations! Hopefully, the others will attempt the questions next time. 1. One of the classic memories of a couple walking in a rain drenched evening under an umbrella is the Raj Kapoor- Nargis hit from Shri 420 'Pyar hua iqrar hua' . During the picturization of this Shankar-Jaikishen masterpiece, three children wearing raincoats walk past. Who were these kids? Raj Kapoor's children: Randhir, Ritu and Reema 2. An Indian movie - subtitled ' Once upon a time in India' for western audiences- has a popular rain song penned by Javed Akhtar and composed by AR Rehman. Which song am I referring to? The movie was Lagaan, and the song 'Ghanan ghanan' 3. Whenever lyricists evoke visual images of 'saawan', reference to the 'papiha' is inevitable. Remember the lyrical ' Bole re papihara' from Guddi? Can you name the singer of this song and its Music director? Vani Jairam was the singer who is still remembered by this song. Vasant Desai scored the music. 4. These folk songs are said to have originated in Mirzapur. They are sung during the rains and are named after the black monsoon clouds. Which format of folk songs am I referring to? Kajri. These folk songs literally mean Kajal or kohl. But folklore has it that they are named after the 'black' monsoon clouds 5.What is common to these rain songs: Phir se aiyo badra bidesi (film: Namkeen), Badi der se megha barse (Namkeen) and Chhoti si kahaani se (Ijaazat). They are written by Gulzar, composed by RD Burman and sung by Asha Bhosale- the terrific threesome.Incidentally Gulzar has written most beautiful rain songs including Bole re papihara. Why, he seems to enjoy the beauty of the monsoons so much that he's even named his daughter Meghna! 6. Can you name two evergreen Jagjit Singh melodies which bring to mind the beauty of baadal and baarish: one which talks about childhood (lyrics by Sudarshan Faakir) and the other which talks about the parched earth responding to the rains from his album 'Insight' (lyricist: Nida Fazli). The first is the universal favorite, 'woh kaagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani'. The second of course, 'Garaj baras pyaasi dharti par' 7. A recent 'cross over' English film carried a version of the Mohd. Rafi, Laxmi-Pyare song, " aaj mausam bada beimaan hai " from the old movie Loafer. Which movie am I talking about? Monsoon Wedding -directed by Mira Nair 8. In the last movie he composed music for, the legendary Rahul Dev Burman composed a rain song. The movie was released after his death and critics called it his best ever work. Which movie? Which song? 1942- a love story. Rimjhim rimjhim 9. Remember Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh stuck in a glasshouse in the rain in " Betaab " ? What was that popular number and whose was the male voice? 'Baadal yun garajta hai'. Shabbir Kumar 10. A rain song very popular in nursery school annual day functions....' Ghode jaisi chaal, haathi jaisi dum, o saawan raaja, kahaan se aaye tum'. Who is the music director of this song where Shiamak Davar made a number of kids dance with Shahrukh and Madhuri? Uttam Singh (BTW..where has he disappeared? ) Bonus Question: Don't you just love the smell of the parched earth when the first showers drench the earth? Believe it or not, there's a word in English for this " bheeni bheeni khushboo " . Well, simple question....what's that word? 'Petrichor' (pronounced PET-ri-kuhr) is the smell of rain on dry ground. More specifically, it's the pleasant smell that often accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather in certain regions. It was named by two Australian researchers in an article in Nature in 1964, who discovered that the smell is an oily essence that comes from rocks or soil that are often (but not always) clay-based. The oil is a complicated set of at least fifty different compounds, rather like a perfume. It turned out that the oils are given off by vegetation during dry spells and are adsorbed on to the surface of rocks and soil particles, to be released into the air again by the next rains. The word comes from Greek petros, a stone, plus ichor, from the Greek word for the fluid that flows like blood in the veins of the gods. So the word means something like " essence of rock " . Guest guest
I enjoyed the answers Anshu. Petrichur..... Lovely. That smell you get only in India. I love it. Here we do not get that smell after any rain (we do not have a first rain as it rains every alternate day)... With regards L/M Prasad (lp1960@...) Wish a very happy and cheerful day keep smiling > Re: Answers to Monsoon songs quiz > > > > As promised here are the answers. The only people who > attempted this quiz were Ameet and Kishore.
