Guest guest
Well here is a strange one. My son who has cerebral palsy {22 years old, quadrapelgic} was having a horrible time last month and I was really worried we were going to have to do some pretty invasive testing. His mucous problem was so severe he was vomitting every morning and coughing so hard he'd vomit several times a day. Took him to our RRT asthma ed guy and he really questioned if it was asthma or reflux. We decided to discontinue the qvar because even using the inhaler would bring on such a horrible coughing fit. We had xopenex in the neb for crisis times and switched from nasonex to nasocort as it was a finer mist and he didn't seem to gag on it as much. So here's the kicker: We also decided to give him a good "clean out". Started giving him miralax to get his bowels moving better and oh boy did we get results!! He's taking it regularly now and I do have to say the mucous issue has gotten much better. That's all he's taking right now. He does still cough but it seems more to be because of his tone issues from the CP. He does not coordinate his chew/swallow real well so he typically coughs up a lot of his food. Lovely isn't it? We have not entirely ruled out asthma but for now he is doing well. My daughter turned 8 yesterday and really seems to have turned a corner. This time last year she was having a horrible time and we were very concerned. Now she is taking her meds regularly {pulmicort tubuhaler, foradil, nasonex and albuterol or xopenex for crisis} and her peak flows are excellent. She can ride her bike and play and actually SLEEP at night!! Oh and the dark circles under her eyes are gone. Our RRT has talked about reducing some meds but we are waiting till spring as winter has seemed to be her hardest season. And me...doing fine. Not taking any meds right now. Maybe need to use the combivent once or twice a month. My big test will be when I walk the 2 mile Christmas Tree Lane at night when it's cold and wet out next week. I'll make sure to have daughter and myself properly dosed up so we can enjoy ourselves and not huff and puff and cough our way through! Guest guest
Well, I'll jump in here. I'm feeling better now that my asthma is under control again. I had prednisone but it does help. My blood sugars are still a bit high, but beginning to settle down. For the newbies, I'm asthmatic and diabetic. Pred messes up my blood sugar but helps the asthma. I did see my doctor today for a checkup and he said my lungs sounded great. Hear's hoping things stay settled down for a good long while. The weather here is still weird, so I don't know. , Co-Moderator Family wrote: Well here is a strange one. Guest guest
I'm new here, but thought I'd pipe up and say that I just took myself off from Advair after having used it for more than 5 years (and in consultation with my doctor). I am trying to learn Buteyko breathing instead. I don't have that quite figured out, but just doing some of the things, such as making sure to breathe through my nose and not mouth and trying to breathe less (reduced volume breathing) is helping. I have been doing well for five weeks now without the Advair. I joined because I am determined to be able to exercise again for more than 5 minutes. My exercise-induced asthma has been debilitating in recent years, so I'm open to all suggestions. Best wishes. --dawn > > I am doing ok.I am learning how to use my advair.I also have proventil and sigular. It has taken me a little bit of time and trying but,I finally figured out how to use my advair.I'm not sure I like it.Does anyone else in the group use advair? > > matt wrote: > > > Hello > How has everyone been doing. > Hope every one is taking care of there asthma and staying out of the > hospital. > Remember to wash your hands alot. > Matt >
Guest guest
I can not express how GLAD I am that SOMEONE at a pediatrician's office FINALLY listened when I said It's MORE than just allergies"... Previously Ty would be coughing ALL the time... A daily occurrence... He's on advair now and has only had a few coughs (but those have been associated with a cold/drainage... NOT just coughing due to asthma!)... ALSO... They started him on Flonase... And for the frst time since my baby was BoRN (he's 5 1/2 years old now!) he has a CLEAR nasal passage... Almost ALWAYS has been runny or dried crust... I am SOOOO happy with this!!! Now if I could only remember to have him take the meds EVERY day... (but even when he skips a dose, or a day... He doesn't cough like he used to!!) Thanks for asking Matt... I think this group is going to be SO much better now that people actually have control over who is here and what is posted!! Guest guest
OMG.. WAIT... Dark circles... What does that have to do with asthma/allergies?? I always picked up on it as a sign that Ty is sick... But didn't equate it to anything like that... Can someone please elaborate!!?? -- Re: how is everyone been doing Well here is a strange one. Guest guest
Well for my daughter it was very likely due to lack of sleep because she was coughing all night long. Nights were horrible for her. Also being clear and breathing well just helps with overall health and you're just going to look better. She was so pale and sickly looking when her asthma was so very bad. Her ashtma ed RRT always notates how she appears and is always happy to see the dark circles gone. For the newbies, I'm asthmatic and diabetic. I have reactive hypoglycemia, and those rare times I'm on prednisone my blood sugars go wacky, too, with extreme highs and lows. Even though the course of the med is only a week or so, my sugars take at least another week to get back to normal. > The weather here is still weird, so I don't know. It's crazy here in my part of NJ, too. Who ever heard of 70 in November? Well, it's not a record but unusual. My son, also an asthmatic, came home from his college classes last night with the beginnings of either a cold or allergies again. He had been weaning off his asthma meds since late spring but this morning he made sure to take everything again (Advair, Singulair, and always has his Proventil in his backpack) and will add a Claritan to the mix on his way out the door. At least his peak flow this morning is still in his green zone. Sue in NJ

Previously Ty would be coughing ALL the time... A daily occurrence... When my son was young (almost 5) he started all his asthma and allergy symptoms, yet his doc didn't *believe* that he had asthma and just kept prescribing various cough and cold meds. After 2 or 3 months of this I told him to either test him for asthma or I'm taking him to the pulmonologist. He told me to try " just one more cough medicine " . As soon as we got home from that appointment I called the pulmonologist, was able to get an appointment for the very next day, and as soon as the doc just *looked* at him said he has the " classic " signs of asthma. The doc read the result of his pulmonary function test and said he has the lungs of an 80 year old. He ordered the nebulizer every 4 hours around the clock (The kid couldn't sleep, anyway, with his cough so it as no big deal) with 2 different meds, and within 24 hours he was breathing better, and within 2 weeks he was cough-free and sleeping through the night again. It was SO good to get the right diagnosis and treatment! It's been 18 years now, and my son's asthma is mostly gone so the doc was weaning off his meds, but there are times, like now when he has a cold or during great stress, like final exam week, when the chest starts to tighten, the back starts to ache, and he needs to take some of his meds again. I doubt he'll even completely out-grow it, especially living in this congested, polluted urban area. Sue in NJ

Guest guest
This is so interesting. Where I live asthma is so prevelent that that is usually the FIRST thing that gets diagnosed with. I used to find it so irritating that everytime I took my kids in with a cough w/o a fever the first word out of the doctors mouth was asthma. I think that may be why it took me so long to accept the diagnoses for my daughter. I just thought it was a really rough viral illness that was taking a long time to get over. I was overwhelmed with all the meds they threw at us and thought it was ridiculous. I didn't think it was so ridiculous when she had to be hospitalized for a partially collapsed lung! Guest guest
I was dealing with Ty's cough for 2+ years... Because of hubby's career, we move frequently... Always keep records with us.. Ped to ped everyone made us do the cough/cold/sinus medicine... I would get frustrated when it didn't stop the cough, and rather than taking him right back in... would wait a few months until Ty would make a comment like "Mommy.. I wish I had a new mouth so I could quit coughing"... then I'd take him back and start again! Finally in August when I was about to give up on this peds office I told the doc (we saw a diff doc each time we went in until that point) that I was TIRED of allergy/cold meds and that I felt it was something beyond that...He listed off a million meds and when i said "tried it... didn't work" to each of them... he listened to his lungs... and heard... OMG... WHEEZING!!! LOL -- Re: how is everyone been doing >I can not express how GLAD I am that SOMEONE at a pediatrician's office FINALLY listened when I said It's MORE than just allergies"... Guest guest
I use Advair and like it. I seem to be doing some better since I was bumped up to the 500/50 dosage.
