Hi.I'm Joy.I'm on the same meds you are and allergic to the same thing.I also have 2 cats that I don't want to lose.I hope you find a solution that works for you.My doctor said I needed to get rid of them but,I've had mine since they were kittens and I'd like to keep them.My advair seems to be working for me.Dave wrote: Hello Everyone!! I'm Dave.. I've been here for a while, but my asthma has been acting up for a while now. I finally went to the Asthma Allergy doctor and found out that I'm

allergic to Ragweed, Mold, cockroach, dogs, and cats. I have 2 cats that I'm so attached to, but don't want to get rid of them. I am going to keep the cats out of our bedrooms and see if it will work. During the day that I work, I will hook the door shut so the 2 cats won't get in. I'm taking Advair, Singulair, Nasonex nose spray, and Albuterol. Hope that will help my asthma to get better. Any other suggestions beside to find a good home for the 2 cats? It will be hard for us to do that. Thanks for all of your help! Dave

I have similar allergies and was taking about the same set of drugs

(Flonase instead of Nasonex) until recently (I recently ditched the

Advair by starting breathing exercises and listed some of what has

helped me in an earlier e-mail, including breathing only through nose,

reduced volume of breathing...)

My daughter has a cat and I just make certain that I take Claritin-D

(I take a 24-hour pill daily) and then it is manageable. When the

kids see me itching my nose around the cat or my eyes getting red,

they ask if I have forgotten to take Claritin-D and they are always

right.

Best wishes. --dawn

I completely understand your desire not to get rid of the cats. One

of the worst things you can do is let the cats into your bed room.

Make that an off limits area for them.

Another thing you may need to do is wash all your bedding really good

and vacuum or steam clean the carpet in your bed room.

Use high quality air filters in your heater/air conditioner, change

them monthly or every other month. You may want to buy an air

purifier.

Other tips, wash your hands frequently. Use your preventive meds

daily. Vacuum your house regularly. Brush or have someone else

brush your cats regularly to get rid of excess hair. Look into

allergy shots.

Good luck.

Another product you can try, they sell it at PetSmart or PetCo, is Allerpet/C. Ive never tried it myself, but the girl I talked to about the stuff said they sell a lot of it so I guess it works. It is like a baby wipe and you wipe it on the animal. Its supposed to help with the dander.

I had a friend that was allergic to his cat, use to bath it every

week. Not sure how much the cats would like it, but it helped for

him. I think if was me or the dogs, I would have to be the one to

find a new home. Fortuneately, pets don't bother me at all.

I had a friend who shaved her cat! It wasn't pretty and I don't recommend it..LOL!

Actually if you start them as kittens they really do enjoy baths. You just have to make sure to get them very dry because they can get quite ill if they are wet for a long time. My vet just sticks them in a cage and hangs a hair dryer. Not sure how you would do that at home, maybe put them in a crate?

Hi Dave, Try using Febreeze allegen reducer after cleaning up all of the hair. Dampen all meterial surfaces (couches, rugs, sheets, etc). That helps my kids.berry_kris wrote: I had a friend that was allergic to his cat, use to bath it every week. Not sure how much the cats would like it, but it helped for him. She told me even if I bathed it, someone else changed the litter box

etc... I would most likely end up with asthma and my kids eventually

would too - since allergies are inherited.

Your kids have a 50% chance of having allergies just by you having

allergies. It does not mean though that your kids are going to be

allergic to the same things you are...it just means that they have a

chance of being allergic to something. I think that your allergist

wanted to make sure you dont keep the kitten. In my extended family,

none of the adults in my mothers generation have asthma, yet there are

at least 3 of us in my generation who do.

Dont get me wrong, Im glad you decided it wasnt worth the risk...but

just remember that because you are allergic to something or might have

asthma doesnt mean your kids are sentenced to the same fate. They

might find they are allergic to something else.
