Guest guest
There are websites that discuss IEPs and accomodations and 504s. One is here at called . I know I have 2 special needs kids- one is 17 with bipolar disorder and major anxiety attacks where she stops breathing and her heart rate shoots up to 200 beats per minute. The other is my 10 year old who has something called heterotopia (the gray matter and white matter of his brain are reversed) and he has atypical seizures and mild cerebal palsy.and now he lost his vision in one eye in an accident end of Oct this year....both have IEPs at school (more enforceable than 504s) as for getting more money from fed government, not so sure just how much more- my husband is 100% service connected disabled...neither of my kids gets any SSI becuz they already get compensation as a dependant whether disabled or not.....and they get ChampVA for health coverage, but it has nothing to do with their disability- we all get it anyway. SO my husband is 100% service connected disabled and gets veterans disability and ChampVA and has since 1990, and I am disabled via social security... Now when I was in nursing school I DID get help from DORS (dept of rehabiliatative services) for being a displaced homemaker---due to my husbands disability and me having to go learn a job that made more than minimum wage. and also due to my bipolar disorder- as me being a handicapped person..and in nursing school DORS helped me pay for tuition and they also helped me get a " note taker " - someone who used carbon paper when they took their own notes and they gave me a copy of their notes- cuz sometimes I had a hard time writing. Yes, an IEP can have on it that you can use a heat pack...my sons IP says he gets books on tape (he cannot yet read) and he gets it on his IEP to be able to use a word processor for all written work (cuz he cannot write legibly) and he is in a standard classroom. My dtr had it in her IEP that she could leave the room and go to guidance office if she felt a panic attack coming on...(she was in a special ed room due to the bigger ratio of staff to students) SO certainly you should be able to get an IEP based on needing a heat pack. If your school has stairs and they cause you difficulty, you should also be able to get it on an IEP that you may use the school elevator or have your classes all on one floor. and if it is hard for you to write, accomodations should be found to help you with that, too. Maybe you can check out the group and discuss school accomodations with them.and you should also be able to use the accomodations in HS as well. - In , " Bridget Hiskins " <nashirafae@c...> wrote: > > I can tell ya, I have a special needs child as well. I have a little boy with an unknown neuromuscular disorder. I have been though the whole rigmarole with IEPS and so on and I can tell ya it is pretty much the same here in Mass as it is where you are in Texas. I always assumed it was the same no matter where you are. > > > > Good luck > > > > Beannu Si > > > > Nash > > > > > > [ ] Re: Teen Supposed to be having fun in senior year, diaginosed with RA > > > , > I have a special needs teenager..though she does not have RA she has > sickle cell anemia.
