Guest guest
From kattemayo@... Reagrding Reeves, the Whistle Blower Tho, it seemed to some that Reeves move was heroic, others believe it was simply self-preservation, for tho he himself had been part of the malfeasance, he now had total legal job security under the Federal Whistle Blower Act. Reeves is well known among advocates who've spent 10+ years in rooms and committees with him. I miss so much having multiple long term activists and physicians here to remind us of history ( " Multiple " to provide checks and balances, which we used to see regularly). Some google and other searches would show some of the testimonies. Plus, PLEASE READ Osler's Web. It is our history and that of the CDC actions. A few things I recall over the years: *In an open govt meeting, Reeves said it was a wonder any Doctor would treat PWC's because they are so " obnoxious " . The DHHS refused to censure him for that, and othe insulting comments * He always considered CFS to be upper class white womens disease and dismissed need for adolescent or minority studies. {Note: The Wichita study was primarily white women, and the massive PR campaign in June will target women between 40 and 60 } BTW, Cheney said " A virus does not recognise a Yuppie " * Reeves refused for years to get the proper numbers out on the epidemic. After several studies finally done, the CDCs estimates had to be adjusted upward by many many many thousands. 5-fold, 50-fold? I remember, but don't remember, when it happened. *on the 3/27/96 edition of Prime Time Live, Reeves--who along with Straus, head of CFIDS research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), refused to be interviewed--stated by telephone that CFS " is not caused by a virus " ; that there are/were " NO cluster outbreaks, " labeling the one at Lake Tahoe as " hysteria " ; and that CFS " does NOT affect the immune system. " Yet, responded to a letter from Joan Irvine, advising her not to give blood. {See " Joan Irvine, Blood Letters " } * one year, Klimas handed him something like 50 articles on CFS Immune Dysfunction, saying we have the evidence. . Reeves, chilly, said " We already have a Library here " and refused to take them. * My own friend, founder of Nat'l Gulf War Vets Family Org witnessed Reeves on a GWS panel in Houston stating that CFS was not a real disease. * Several have stated that he has always considered CFS to have PSych or stress origins * In the CURRENT announcement, he states that there is not cognitive dysfunction or sleep disorder. * If you notice, in the CURRENT " ground breaking biological " announcement, Reeves gives promise of treatment with CBT and " medications " ONLY. *What, pray tell (under Reeves' Watch), are PSYCHIATRISTS doing smack in the middle of every CFS study and policy made by the CDC??? Finally, here is a study, co=authored by Reeves, published in JANUARY 2006 titled " Cognitive Dysfunction Relates to Subjective Report of Mental Fatigue in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome " Remind me someday to tell you about my Neuropsych testing experiences. Guest guest
Thank you! That's what I thought I remembered about Wm Reeves, but was afraid my brain fog had confused him with someone else. By the way, does anyone know if the woman (whose name I can't remember at the moment) who wrote Osler's Web, is still writing? I haven't been able to find any other works by her, although I haven't done a search in the last few months. She herself had CFIDS and should be considered a real hero. Theresa in TN A bit of Wm.
