Bad luck Britney, you and me both, I'm in exactly the same situation,

doing 2 months Pred to get me stable again.

How much are you on? I'm down to 5 mg daily, if I have more I suffer

palpitations, sleepless nights weight gain, face bloat, bad temper all

the classic side effects. There are some good books on Amazon about

coping with Prednisolone, you might want to read up on it. I can't

really give you much advice I just grit my teeth and struggle through

it knowing that all these things are the drug. You should also be

taking a calcium supplement as it leaches calcium from your bones.

Let me know which effects you are having and I'll try and see if I can

think of anything that helps.

Right now I'm on 10mg a day, and the goal is to drop down to 10mg every other day over the course of the next month. I figure I would rework my diet to avoid gaining weight (darn, no more french fries and veggie burgers from burger king...) Watching what I eat is going to be easier said then done because I'm always hungry. At least I'm addicted to diet Mt.Dew instead of regular :-) Brittneyhttp://www.livejournal.com/users/redtailhawk >> Bad luck Britney, you and me both, I'm in exactly the same situation, > doing 2 months Pred to get me stable again.> How much are you on? I have not been on prednisone in a while but some 1 told me that an increased appetite is common while on prednisone

Yeah, that is a side effect of pred. I however, even when not on pred, I am hungry all the time. I eat a lot, but don't gain weight. I'm fortunate that way, except my mother has this crazy notion I'm anorexic (I eat, she knows that. She also knows I walk everywhere, and am on the go all the time w/ school and work. She thinks I'm to skinny...) I'm just worrying about the fact now I'm REALLY hungry all the time, and there is going to be a point in time when I can't burn off everything I eat. I'm happy with the way I am right now. I just finished a course of Pred and I didn't have the eating issues I had the first time I was on it but the insomnia really got me, I couldnt sleep for a couple of nights. My doc also put me on Micardis because my blood pressure has come up, possibly because of the Pred, I was also suffering an ear infection.

By the way I'm new here I'm Sapphyre, was just diagnosed with asthma this year at age 45 so I'm real new at how to live with it ... pleased to meet you all :)

Hi Sapphyre,

Welcome to the group. Pred will also wreak havoc with the indocrine system. I'm now diabetic because I had to take it so much, so please be careful with it.

Take careSapphyre wrote:

I am concerned about the amount of predisone my 5 year dd has taken

she has pretty much been on it for about 2 1/2 years she has had

periods for several weeks she has been off but I do worry that it

will cause her problem in the future. Is this common with steriods

is just 2 1/2 years considered a long time to take them? Just

something else to worry about!

Hi Sharon,

I just found out in my city we have an Asthma Education Center. You have to be referred by your doctor, but perhaps this is an option for you so that you can speak to professionals in the hospital and find out more about the long term effects of prednisone.

Sometimes, you can even write to the company that makes the medication and they will send you information also.

Would this be an option for you?

I'm sorry to hear your little girl must take the prednisone. I'll keep her in my prayers.

Yes Sharon, pred can cause problems if taken for a long period of time. I had to take it off and on for about 3 years myself and I'm now a diabetic. It causes the blood sugar to go up. Mine would eventually come back down after the pred, but then it didn't. She can develop problems with her immune system, and have trouble fighting off infections. Keep check on her for problems with growth and have her pediatrician check for endocrine function (diabetes) every now and then. If she starts showing symptoms such as hunger, being very thirsty all the time, peeing a lot, tired all the time, and losing weight, have the doctor check her.

Type 1 diabetics will usually show symptoms, but some type 2s don't. I didn't have any symptoms at all, none. Mine was caught because of recurring skin problems and problems with the skin on my feet being extremely dry and cracking open. Diabetes can cause the skin to be very dry and itchy. Those were the only problems I had but my dermatologist suggested I get my sugar checked. I'm so glad I did.

Your daughter is awfully young to have to take that wicked stuff. I hate pred with a passion. I hope they doctor can get her asthma controlled well enough that she can get off that stuff. I think I'll check and see what else is available here or nearby for asthma education. I know there is a support group that meets in a nearby town. Give that child a hug for me, she deserves it.

Take care,
