I can't speak for , but I can say that it's total chaos here. I

live in Katy (west side of Houston) and can say that people are

definitely panicking. The stores are eery looking - bare shelves

everywhere. Cars were lined up on the same side of the road but facing

each other just to get a spot in line at the gas stations. This alone

caused so much chaos and major traffic problems. Almost every restaurant

was closed and the few who were open, such as Sonic, had a minimum hour

& a half wait for food or were so busy that they stopped taking

orders all together. Every road leading out of the city was packed and at

a stand still. I have been through several hurricanes in my life, but I

don't remember things being like this. All I can say is that if you

haven't gotten out of the city by now, then you are more than likely

stuck here. My family and I have decided to stay. My husband had to work

part of Thursday morning, and after assessing the traffic, we decided it

would be safer to remain at home. I hope everyone ends up safe and well

and that no one is severely affected by the storm. I think it was very

nice of you to offer up your home, Sara. It's always nice to know someone

out there is thinking of us and really cares.

Be careful everyone and try to stay safe.

I am a houston folks. I evacuated at 3 am on Wednesday. I took my

computer, my dog and a couple of changes of clothes. The people who

left 12 hours later need our prayers.

We're " hunkering " down here in Missouri City! Not sure how long, though.

We tried to go southbound on Hwy 59 yesterday morning, and ended up turning

around.

We went 20 miles in 3 hours! We live off of Hwy 6 (major evacuation route)

which was

totally grid locked.

We are hoping we are on the clean side of Rita. We will check in when all

of this goes

by.

Thanks for the offer......Lynn

I am okay, especially since Rita did not really do much damage to

HOuston. I evacuated at 3AM on Wednesday from Brazoria County and

drove to my mom's house (which is normally 45 minutes away). After

making it halfway there in only 25 minutes I thought I was home

free... but I got stuck at the intersection of hwy 59 and 90 and the

trip to my mom's house ended up taking 6 hours. I had to pull over in

front of imperial sugar plant where I got to pee on a tree in front of

a line of cars... (made my b/f stand in front of me). We had the dogs

with us, and they got pretty restless...

I finally made it to my mom's house by driving on the shoulder of the

road (and yes, I cut off pretty much the whole line of cars) and

turning on hwy 6 and taking a bunch of back roads to get there. If I

would have stayed on that road it might have taken me 12 hours to get

there, that is how bad things were.

ONce we got to mom's house my grandparents, sisters, boyfriend and I

all drove to Hockley where my aunt and uncle live. We barely got any

rain there, just a little wind and some sprinkles. The trip there

didn't take very long because we took a bunch of back roads. The gas

stations were crazy though, people were definitely panicing. It was

just absolute chaos. We did drive back to my mom's house today b/c I

still had 3/4 tank of gas (I have a Corolla, great gas mileage) even

after all of that. My family was driving me nuts, everyone was

fighting, etc...

I feel sorry for all of the Beaumont people...they got hit pretty

hard. We got really lucky and I am definitely feeling blessed and

thankful that I did not have to experience a category 4-5 hurricane...

BTW, thank you for offering SAra!! By the time we realized we needed

to leave there is no way we would have made it very far out of

town...It was really crazy, god forbid if something really bad happens

and we all need to be evacuated immediately....

Part of the problem is that it was not only Houston being evacuated

but also galveston, matagorda, etc...

So glad you are ok, ! Awfully draining for everyone, I'm sure,

but

especially for you. Be sure to rest all you can once you get settled

back in.

One of our caregivers we've known for a long time had 9 family

members up

from the east Texas coastal and Houston areas. All in her two bedroom

apartment she shares with her son. Stories like that all over Dallas

I hear. It

looked like a lot of folks were heading back today before they gave

the all

clear. I think I'd be worried about my home, too. But the prospect of

no gas or

services along the way, and no services at home, would not be good.

It's certainly been a surreal and overwhelmingly emotional few weeks.

And I

guess we get to hold our breaths until Thanksgiving, when the

hurricane

season is (supposedly) over. My eyes are becoming glued to the

Atlantic.

I hope that everyone has gotten home safely and that everything was ok

when they got back home. This hurricane season has been especially

unsettling (especially for the Gulf). Our prayers were with you the

entire time. I live just outside of Austin (Bastrop) and saw the

traffic from Houston first-hand. The traffic was so bad that those

that worked in Austin (my husband included)and even Bastrop took

backroads. It could have been much worse but my heart still goes out

for those directly impacted by the storm.

The mess created by forcing people to follow specific evacuation routes is the problem about what has happened this time around. If they had just let people spread out on ALL highways, I don't believe for one minute that this would have happened. You can't take 3 million people and confine them to a few major highways and this not happen. As I said, I will break a police road block in order to follow the back roads that I want to the next time this happens, and if they want to spend the man power and their precious time chasing me, well, I guess I'll just go to jail, and they can be liable for causing me to blow away in a hurricane in a place where this is likely to happen. My kids will sue up one side and down the other because they went through the same thing as everyone else. Noone is going to tell me that I can't drive on a specific roadway, unless that roadway is damaged. That was the cause of this crap. The least they could have done is scatter some outhouses along all major routes, but that would be spending our hardearned money the right way, no, we couldn't have that.
