Re: Causes of Hypothyroidism

Hi,

The cause of my hypothyroidism is hypopituitarism. The pituitary gland produces TRH which triggers the thyroid to produce TSH. I think I said that correctly.

My doc gave me a test for IGF1 and found the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is low, 77 on a scale of 71-290. He suggests injections, by me, daily, of HGH. We are thinking on that.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to know if anyone knew what can cause hypothyroidism (other than Hashimoto's). I have seen the Endo for the second time and my lab results (including antibodies) were normal. I know that Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism but what else can cause it? The doctor is still calling me hypothyroid dispite the results. Does anybody else here have hypothyroidism but negative on antibodies?

The hypothalamus (part of the brain) produces the TRH (thyrotropin releasing hormone) which triggers the pituitary to produce TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone-also called "thyrotropin"), which stimlates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone.

If the defect is at the level of the hypothalamus, you have central hypothyroidism. If the pituitary is defective, you have secondary hypothyroidism. If your pituitary defect causes all hormones to be deficient, you have pan-hypopituitarism.

Who is your doc that is willing to Rx HGH? Do you know how much the HGH costs?Marilyn OHara wrote:

Yes, I have hypothyroidism without antibodies. I contracted a very bad

cold which apparently attacked my thyroid. Usually the gland recovers.

Mine did not.

Thanks for the replies! How do you find out the root cause of the

hypothyroidism? I really want answers. I know that there are

several causes of hypothyroidism outside of Hashimoto's but how do

you find out the cause for sure? Some of the causes can be

reversed. I know that the thyroid becomes dependent on the meds and

the longer you are on them, it can become impossible to get off of

them (if it is reversible). Are there other tests that can be

done? I have a follow up with the endo in eight weeks and would

really like to be armed with info when I see her. Thanks!!!

Hypothyroidism is almost never reversible. Unless you have transient thyroiditis, you will need to be on thyroid meds the rest of your life. Transient thyroiditis is rare.

I have a neuro in Dallas and I am looking for a good endo for a second or third opinion. No, I don't know how expensive but have heard more than a thousand a month which has stopped me in my tracks. I have not been working much in past 8 years and can't see how I could afford it unless it provided me with the energy to work and make more to pay for it. Then I realize that I am going around in circles.

Sometimes thyroid disease can be caused by environment -- exposure

to chemicals -- for instance, I grew up just a few blocks from an

oil refinery. A lot of people in the same kind of circumstance

develop thyroid problems.

There is also post-partum thyroid disease.

And then there's genetic reasons. Any problems in your family?

The only case that I know of is my aunt who has Grave's. It seems

like my family is " allergic " to doctors and therefore avoid them as

much as possible. To my knowledge, no one has had a thyroid test

even done. So if there is a family history of thyroid disease, I

would have no idea! In my aunt's case, it could be environmental.

She lived in Los Alamos, which is close to the nuclear plant.

Exposure to radiation is a major risk factor for thyroid cancer. This is why I only get my dental X-rays once every four years.sandibousquet wrote:
