Guest guest
Thanks, Courtenay!! Can you send me your gumbo recipe? I like what you said here: *Any recipe requiring more than three ingredients that > you don't normally keep on hand is a waste of money, > unless you're throwing a dinner party. I think I may be going on a gluten free diet soon, so I am going to make friends with corn tortillas and rice, LOL. I am not worried about the carbs, I have been eating a lot of junky foods lately (mainly b/c I am too tired to cook, my house is a pig-sty, and I still feel extremely hypo even on 2.5 grains of armour). I want to start eating healthy again, I know my diet isn't helping things... What is a french steamer? We have a steamer to steam veggies in...is it the same thing? Also, I have found that it is much easier to use frozen veggies (for me). I like frozen veggies b/c I can stock up ahead of time, they only take 5 minutes to steam, and they won't rot in my fridge (and I don't have to cut them or wash them, HA!). Plus, I read that they actually contain more nutrients than fresh veggies b/c they are frozen right away. I looove acorn squash. I have made a really good dish using squash and organic unsweetened apple juice. If you can't have apple juice, you can use applesauce instead. You just thoroughly cook 1 acorn and 1 butternut squash, and puree in a food processor. Add apple juice (or applesauce and a bit of water) and cinnamon. Stick in the fridge. It tastes really good cold, reminds me of pumpkin pie (but much healthier!!). Take care, L. > Sorry-- I accidentally sent this before I finished > typing it. Guest guest
Hey , I kind of let my diet slide when we moved. I notice that if I eat bread/gluten products I feel so much worse and my digestive system is a mess~ I think rice is a no-no, though, if I'm not mistaken. > Thanks, Courtenay!! > > Can you send me your gumbo recipe? > > I like what you said here: > *Any recipe requiring more than three ingredients that > > you don't normally keep on hand is a waste of money, > > unless you're throwing a dinner party. > > I think I may be going on a gluten free diet soon, so I am going to > make friends with corn tortillas and rice, LOL. Guest guest
Hi , This is interesting, I have heard that women with reproductive issues often have gluten intolerance. I am interested to find out if I am allergic to gluten or maybe just wheat. Wheat is one of the top most genetically engineered crops in the US. I don't plan to stop eating rice b/c it is an unrefined carb. I would like to eliminate wheat, refined carbs, and possibly dairy. I have tried the whole foods diet which includes unlimited amounts of lean protein, nonfat milk (includes cheese and yogurt), fruit, vegetables, oatmeal, and one serving a day of starchy carbs (rice, potatoes, and pasta). While on this diet i lost weight really fast (4 pounds in one week). I am trying to find a diet that will control my IBS (which is a real pain in the *ss, no pun intended). I seem to be allergic to something I am eating, but I am not sure what it is. If I cannot get the food allergy tests I might at least try an elimination diet when I feel up to it. How is your spider bite? > > Thanks, Courtenay!! > > > > Can you send me your gumbo recipe? > > > > I like what you said here: > > *Any recipe requiring more than three ingredients that > > > you don't normally keep on hand is a waste of money, > > > unless you're throwing a dinner party. > > > > I think I may be going on a gluten free diet soon, so I am going > to > > make friends with corn tortillas and rice, LOL. Guest guest
Hi, ! I think the spider bites scarred me for life. The shoulder one looks very healthy. We went to a beach and spent the afternoon in the sun on Labor Day! That was the first time I've been able to tolerate the sun in several years. The inside thigh bite is still a little purple but no more fever, finally! Thanks for asking, though! Have you read Broda Chapter 15 on diet? Even if I eat oatmeal, I end up with the runs?! > Hi , > > This is interesting, I have heard that women with reproductive > issues often have gluten intolerance. Guest guest
Glad your spider bites are better, at least. Maybe you really are gluten intolerant? I think I may just be intolerant to wheat, I dunno. Different things bother me on different days... It is kind of annoying. On the + side I like drinking V8. It tastes pretty good! I haven't read the BB book b/c I don't have a copy. I have the Endometriosis Diet book though... that one is pretty good. It says to avoid wheat and soy (and most dairy). I dunno. I need to do something. > > Hi , > > > > This is interesting, I have heard that women with reproductive > > issues often have gluten intolerance. Guest guest
I just went thru some diet experimentation I'll share, for what it's worth.. I've been low carbing for almost 2 years. I have a history of some really ugly stomach probs, which, of course were diagnosed as stress, along with everything else in my life! When I started low carbing, my stomach probs decreased immediately, but it didn't eliminate them completely. When I saw Dr. Launius last month, he mentioned, based on my history of tummy troubles (which includes your food being recognizable when it goes thru you) I might be celiac (this, along with low b12 levels). He wasn't against a LC diet, but wasn't sure that was really necessary, perhaps a gluten free diet, instead (a few things allowed on LC have gluten...LC tortillas, salad dressings, condiments, etc.). He gave me the option of actually being tested...I really don't need a celiac dx, as it's just controlled with diet, and another dx just makes me harder to insure at this point! I tried gluten free, and even added some carbs I haven't had in 2 years...I added a bit of rice and corn, and to compensate for the additional carbs, lowered my fat. OMG, my body cannot process carbs...gluten free or not! I tried it for 2 weeks and was miserable! I was jet propelled...I was embarrassed to be in the room alone with myself!!! If I didn't have hideous gas, I had gas pains that brought me to my knees! After 2 weeks, my family, who have all ragged me for 2 years about how unhealthy a LC diet is (now keep in mind I eat more veggies in one week now than I did in the first 40 years of my life!) have backed down and admitted a LC way of life is the healthiest for me (if not, they would never be able to stay in a room with me for very long!). I think it varies from person to person...as we low-carbers say, YMMV (your mileage may vary), but I found for me, strict low carb is the only thing I can tolerate...and by the way, very careful gluten free has made a big difference...those last little tummy troubles have not been around since I went LC/GF. Maybe TMI, but I haven't had diarrhea in over a week...I haven't been able to say that since I was about 12! Guest guest
If it is prepared chicken, then your reaction is probably to MSG which is in most seasonings used on chicken. If it is to home made chicken, check your seasonings for MSG. Drunk sleepy is a perfect description of the effects of MSG. It seems that developing a reaction to MSG happens after many exposures. Higher sensitivity may be something that happens to hypo people. I'm sensitive to it now, but wasn't 5 years ago. An older friend, 72, is somewhat sensitive to it and says he didn't use to be. MSG also causes me to retain water as well as fall asleep. Niki wrote: Does anyone else have a problem with chicken? I've never been allergic to it (and I have lots of food allergies) but over the last few months I've noticed I get "drunk sleepy" every time I eat it. I'm not completely avoiding it, just don't have it for lunch anymore because I always end up on my office floor asleep if I do. If I have it in the evening, I usually just have to go to bed and sleep it off. Niki --
Guest guest
On the subject of allergies/food intolerance, the effects are cumulative. That is why it is so difficult to nail them down. For instance, from testing, I know I am allergic to nuts, chocolate, strawberries, peanut butter, and fumes form cleaning supplies. All alcoholic beverages have a slight histamine effect and are always a poison to anyone. Cigarette smoke is irritating to anyone's lungs. SO, if I inhale and ingest several on these items in one day, I will likely get a reaction. If only one or two on a day I am feeling good---no problem. If I am ill, and drink a few beers or wine, I will be much worse the next day. Also, having something I am somewhat allergic to early in the day is less of a problem than having it before bedtime, such as strawberries. I hope this is helpful to someone. Guest guest
I've seen a different reaction to MSG manifested by a couple of people I know.... One of them seemingly had an MSG " attack " after eating Thai food. His face went totally red, and he became overheated and had to sit down about an hour after consuming his meal. The other is a friend of mine, who has an MSG allergy. If it's low levels of MSG, she just ends up feeling ill at the stomach; if the food contains high levels of MSG, it actually will make her tongue have a burning sensation. I avoid MSG because I feel as though it is a stimulant, like many preservatives, and it seems to exacerbate my anxiety attacks. So, no MSG for me. Best-- Courtenay. --- henningc50 wrote: An > older friend, 72, is somewhat sensitive to it and > says he didn't use to > be. Guest guest
I think your best bet is to find the Broda book, used, on Amazon. I got my copy for $8, I think, plus shipping. As a side note, I buy almost all of my books on Amazon now, especially the medical ones, because they just have better rates. Regarding the chicken issue, I haven't had that happen, but I have had a similar reaction to turkey, last Thanksgiving. I have this far-fetched theory that some of the animals we eat may have been fed soy-type products. It didn't feel like a tryptophan reaction because it came on suddenly, almost violently, and I left my dinner guests with my husband and family, got into bed with my clothes on, and fell into a dead sleep for four hours. I'm staying away from turkey, and I only buy certain brands of meat. Best--- Courtenay. --- Niki wrote: I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked for the book while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at didn't have it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another bookstore! From what you've shared, it sounds like it's pretty similar to what I do, as I'm avoiding all processed meats, etc, and stick to whole foods. I just don't have fruit too often...still makes my blood sugar wacky. Does anyone else have a problem with chicken? Guest guest
, I used to have these terrific reactions to certain foods. I would eat certain things and immediately go into what I called a " food coma " . These started about 11 years before I was diagnosed. How I ever made it to the day I got diagnosed, I will never know!!!!! A large part of my getting better involved food allergy testing. I was tested for 75 foods I ate all the time. I was allergic to 65 of them. I took 6 allergy shots for a year. Again, the change was very slow. I would say that I did not even see any change until at the end of the year, I started to re-add food to my diet and it didn't make me sleepy or make me itch or make my brain fog. Amazing! Guest guest
When I get the money, I would like to invest in some grass fed beef. I am a member of HOuston Milk Club, which is the best source of raw milk in houston. You can also get grass fed beef, and REAL free range chickens... I agree with you, I think that sometimes we may have reactions to what animals have been fed. Just because a label says that certain meats are organic...well, I don't beleive that is necessarily the case all of the time. I read an article on HOuston Milk Club site which talked about major brands of organic milk (such as horizon) which may have started out as 'good honest companies' but are now corporate. The article says taht oftentimes they have organic cows and nonorganic cows.... the nonorganic cows are supposed to be fore the nonorganic milk. The article says that the organic cows are treated just as bad as nonorganic cows, and sometimes when they become sick...they will send the cow over to the nonorganic farm so that they can be treated with antibiotics. BUT, sometimes they will SWITCH cows...that is, they send a nonorganic cow that HAS been treated with antibiotics over to the ORGANIC farm. I will send you all the article, which would explain things much better than I can.... > > > > I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked > for the book > while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at > didn't have > it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another > bookstore! Guest guest
Sharon, This is interesting, I have thought about doing this myself. Did you go to an allergist or a gastroenterologist/? I am trying to space things out, as I am beginning to feel like a pincushion... NOt to mention the fact that I don't want to put myself through too much shock... I am not quite sure how you made it up until you were diagnosed, either! It is a miracle that you did not go into a myxedema (sp??) coma!! > > > > > > > > I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked > > for the book > > while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at > > didn't have > > it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another > > bookstore! Guest guest
I don't think that's far-fetched at all! I was actually wondering the same thing about the chicken! It has the same effect on me...and it's the same thing that happens if I eat a LC product with soy, like a tortilla. I never eat out, only what I cook (or my mom or kids occasionally, but they're very careful about what they feed me now) and we always check seasonings for culprits like MSG (I make most of my own seasoning blends now, anyway). > > > > I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked > for the book > while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at > didn't have > it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another > bookstore! Guest guest
, There is allergy and then there is allergy. Both doc and I thought that a lot of allergy workups were grossly inadequate. Of course, I use an environmental allergist in Lubbock. He is boarded in allergy, ENT and plastics and is in-network for CIGNA. Yea!!!! I stayed on the beginning hormone protocal for about 7n months before I could even think about any allergy work. The allergy treatment was a MAAJOR piece of my wellness. I would not be this well without it. You must remember that all of this takes time. A month of treatment is simply not enough time for ANYTHING to change. likes to say that the miracle is a year from now. Guest guest
The first year of treatment I bought all my food at Whole Foods in Austin or Dallas. All hormone free. All organic. Only spelt. I went about every 3 months and had everything packed in dry ice and brought it back to Lubbock. I was so sick then, that I would be in bed for several days after a trip like that. Guest guest
Sharon, Can you please get me this docs name? Perhaps I can see him next time I come to see Dr. ... I KNOW I have food allergies, as well as LOTS of other allergies. When I was a kid I was sick all of the time and had to have my tonsils and adenoids taken out (at 7). They did an allergy workup and found I am allergic to pretty much everything...but mom says I do not have food allergies. BUT, my dad and I both have severe IBS and I think that there is something we both must have food allergies (wheat?? dairy??). > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked > > > > for the book > > > > while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at > > > > didn't have > > > > it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another > > > > bookstore! Guest guest
You do realize that most commercial organic chicken is fed organic vegetarian feed (by law)... and by vegetarian they usually mean SOY. That is why, if you have money and access to locally raised chicken it is important to utilize that. I, however, do not have the money or time to even THINK about that right now... > > > > > > > > I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked > > for the book > > while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at > > didn't have > > it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another > > bookstore! Guest guest
Call or and they can make the appt to coordinate. In his case, you see the doc and then come back in for allergy testing with his allergy nurses. Then come back in for the info on the results. I do not know how they handle anyone getting injections from out of Lubbock. I know they give injections in the office so they can watch reactions. Once the appt is made, I would suggest calling their office and asking what their policy is. This doctor can be hard to get into given his current surgery schedule. But, I know it would be possible to coordinate a visit with the two docs. Guest guest
Here in Austin we also have a farmer's market and a similiar raw milk organization... one of my friends shops there on Saturday mornings...she has to get chicken eggs that do not contain soy products...and she is part of the milk co-op for raw milk. If anyone wants more info I can ask her - just let me know.. Cheers, Teesmr79410 wrote: The first year of treatment I bought all my food at Whole Foods in Austin or Dallas. All hormone free. All organic. Only spelt. I went about every 3 months and had everything packed in dry ice and brought it back to Lubbock. I was so sick then, that I would be in bed for several days after a trip like that.Sharon> > > > > > > > I'm still interested in the Broda diet...looked> > for the book > > while out shopping last weekend, but the B & N I was at> > didn't have > > it, and I ran out of steam before I got to another> > bookstore! Guest guest
We think about it all the time. My husband loved Lubbock when he was in school and for the 10 years he lived there. Me, I love the high desert! Jan wrote: Have you ever thought about moving to Lubbock? wrote: Sharon, Can you please get me this docs name? Perhaps I can see him next time I come to see Dr. ...
