A panel of the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners temporarily suspended the license of Beauford Basped Jr., D.O., license number E3813, of Fort Worth, after determining that Dr. Basped's continuation in the practice of medicine presents a continuing threat to the public welfare. The action was based on the board's findings that Dr. Basped failed to meet the standard of care by writing prescriptions for dangerous drugs and controlled substances without doing an appropriate physical examination or keeping adequate medical records. The findings included information that during visits by an undercover officer and a patient in July and August, 2004, Dr. Basped's assistant fabricated vital signs and histories, and Dr. Basped wrote prescriptions for Lortab, Xanax, Phentermine, Feldene and Desyrel with no exam or a very cursory exam. The doctor's conduct is below the standard of care and constitutes a continuing threat to the public welfare and a real danger to the health of his patients, the panel found. The temporary suspension hearing took place Friday, July 8, and the suspension was effective immediately. The length of a temporary suspension order is indefinite but it remains in effect until the board takes further action. -30- The Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, which will be the Texas Medical Board on September 1, is the state agency that regulates physicians, physician assistants, surgical assistants and acupuncturists and provides consumer protection through licensure, investigation and disciplinary action.
