Guest guest
I take 200 mgs. of MS Contin and drive over 500 miles a week. If you ask a cop you will get the answer you got. I don't look like I am under the influence and would never say I was taking it if I was pulled over. I would drive and forget the police it's none of their buisness..Jim > > Anyone taking this medication have experience with driving?? Guest guest
I have used Oxycontin for over 3 years now and on lower doses (10mg every 12 hours) I feel comfortable driving. I was in an accident while taking 30mg Oxycontin and I panicked when I realized that even though it was not my fault I could be charged with operating a vehicle under the influence. I was rear-ended while my car was stopped- the guy behind me didn't notice that the freeway traffic had slowed and he plowed into me at 60 mph. I was taken to the hospital for loss of consciousness and seat belt bruises. I told the ER doctor what medications I was taking and asked if it would have any bearing on his report to the State Troopers about the accident. He said no, he would report my injuries to them and I could request only part of my medical record be sent to the insurance company. The insurance agent for the driver who hit me came to the hospital to have me sign a release of my medical records but I requested the records myself, looked them over and then forwarded them to the insurance company once I was satisified it only described my injuries. Insurance companies pressures you more than the police-they hassled me about not signing such a " standard form. " I got less compensation than I might have because I wanted to lay low but thats the price I pay for having pain relief! I figure that driving is a privelege and I need to carefully weigh my desire to drive somewhere against the idea that I could be in violation of the letter of the law. My pupils do get smaller on narcotics and if a police officer asked me if I was on drugs I would have a hard time explaining it, so the simple answer is no. The long answer is that I have a medical condition. Beyond that, I want a lawyer to advise me! Teri in CA
Guest guest
Hi Kim and everyone else who posted about this. I've been taking either MSContin and MSIR or OxyContin and OxyIR for about 7 years. I'd much rather be taking my meds, as directed, and drive than do without them and try to drive. I know that I function much better when my pain level is controlled. I'm not at all surprised that a police officer would give the kind of answer you got. He's not trained to see the difference between the medical use of narcotics and the abuse of narcotics. My OxyContin pill bottles actually have fewer warning labels on them than some of my other meds! You do, of course, need to make sure your body has adjusted to the dosage you're taking before driving. If you feel comfortable in your usual activities and seem to be as mentally acute as most of us can hope for, try driving. At first take someone with you, until you're comfortable. I was in an accident in '96 where a driver in front of me decided to turn at the last minute (she had not selected the optional turn signals when she got he car) and the road was wet. I clipped the back of her car, went up a small embankment and through a wooden fence in a guy's front yard. The impact was enough to deploy the air bag in my van (believe me, that is NOT a fun experience). Anyway, the cops interviewed me at the hospital and knew what meds I was taking. The doctor told them that, in his opinion, it was no problem. The other driver was charged with the accident. I believe that the accident would have been worse if I had not been taking pain meds. I know my reaction time would have been much slower. Be as aware as you can of your own abilities. I know that I tire too easily to drive long distances. On short trips I feel fine. Guest guest
I just got a prescription of MS Contin today-start taking it tonight. I asked my doctor about driving with it, and he said it shouldn't be a problem. Anything I should know about it? I'll be taking it along with Darvocet. Guest guest
Thanks, . I started taking it last night, and except foe the " yawnies " around midnight, no woozieness. Am about to take this morning's pill. The only " car thing " I have to do today, is get milk and a Lotto ticket (I'm gonna win tonight!), and that's only a few blocks, and no freeway. Guest guest
Carol, I hope you have as good a result as I do. However a word of advice you should give yourself a week or so to let your body adjust. You may experience fatigue and listlessness until your body adapts.I hardly know I am taking morphine at all now and my percocet is needed less than before no more than twice a day. Good luck, things will be great once the breaking in period is past. Terry

I feel safer driving when I'm in less pain. I feel more alert, better able to concentrate. After a few days, you should have a good feel for how it affects you. Guest guest
Distance driving is not always when things occur, not trying to be the boogey man. Mainly as your body adjusts to the meds I found that all that dissipates. It is difficult to detox that medication so be frugal and careful but enjoy the medication as it allows you to function at a much higher level than some other choices. Sincerely, Alice
Guest guest
I take Ms Contin SA, I hav found much greater relief from the long term effects than the plain fast acting. I hope everyone feels great relief from their pain. Jeff ===== Jeff jkeith@... __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I live in CA where I remember a person getting a DUI for using Prozac. They said it wasn't what the drug was, it was that the person was impaired while driving on it. I'm on a pretty high dose of Oxycontin & I drive in my own car, but I work p/t for a non-profit agency that is always trying to make me drive clients. I won't do it because I'm afraid that if I got in an accident & even though I would probably pass the sobriety test easily, if they took a blood test & saw this much of a drug in my body they would probably " assume " that I was impaired by it. I'll take my chances by myself, but not driving a van full of people. > > > > --- Kim <jasmina_zakiyah@y...> wrote: > > > Anyone taking this medication have experience with driving?? > When I started taking it a few > > > weeks ago I spoke with the WA State Patrol and they told me that > as long as I'm taking the > > > medication I am determined illegal to drive -- but my hubby says > that might be overreacting on > > > their part -- I'm adjusting pretty good and feel fine, I just > can't imagine being 'stuck' > > > forevor in my house unless I have a driver...
