, Make sure to tell them what a tremendous opportunity it would be for

the children to learn first hand how to care about their elders. Is this how

they would feel if it were their own parent's. Just put them somewhere far

away where no one would have to look at them. Out of sight out of mind. I'm

sure if some of these people were violent they would have to fence off the

facility anyway. Maybe they would like a prison instead. My mom's NH in back

to back to juvinile hall. Go for it, tell them how ignorant people are to

these illnesses, tell them how ignorant people are about LBD, even medical

personal. Tell them how better off people would be if more of them would get

involved instead of passing judgement. People are idiots. Good luck with the

letter, Shirley

Here's my favorite quote from that ignorant " nurse " :

" I think it's inappropriate to put a facility where the patients have

mental disorders next to an elementary school when some of these

disorders are sexual, some are violent. "

Here's the link to that article:

, be sure to mention that most Alzheimer's facilities are locked

24/7. Hopefully they will publish your letter. My guess is there

will be lots of letters like yours.

No, I don't get the Des Moines Register, but will stop and buy one

today. Thanks for the heads up!

Sandie,

The Des Moines paper is available online. No need to spend $ on it if

you don't have to! I just read it a little while ago. I think it's

DesMoinesRegister.com.

I bought the paper anyway. Gives me something to do while waiting in

line for my youngest son at the school. I have to get there 30 minutes

just to get a parking spot. Now there is something else that could be

re-thought and changed...also, I talked to my contact, Jim, in LaCrosse,

this morning, just went to the mailbox, and WOW, information from

LaCrosse. He must have driven it to me;-)

Sandi,

Check with your La Cross Facility and see if they have a web-cam that we

could use, then all who cannot make it can see us on the web.

Yes, I saw it both in the paper and on the news yesterday. I have not

had time to get my dander up yet so much going on here. Do you know if there

is an e mail address for letters to the editor?

Thanks for the link to the article. There is a link to Letters to

the Editor so I jotted something down. I doubt they will print it

but it made me feel better.

Here's what I wrote.

In a recent article " a group of West Des Moines neighbors fearing for

children's safety has mobilized to block construction of an

Alzheimer's care facility across the street from an elementary

school. "

At first the attitude of these protestors angered me, but after

thinking about it, now I just feel sorry for them. How sad to think

their own children are watching their actions. Actions based on fears

stemming from misinformation. Putting aside the injustice to those

wanting a peaceful place to care for dementia patients, what about

the protestors teaching their children that people with dementia

diseases are people to fear, people to hide away from children. How

absurd! How sad.

If any of those protestors, or their loved ones, are diagnosed with

Alzheimer's (AD), Lewy Body Disease (LBD), or any of the other forty

or so dementia diseases, how will those children treat them if they

have been exposed to such prejudice as children. YOUR CHILDREN ARE

WATCHING YOU. What goes around, comes around.

I am assuming this will be a locked facility for the protection of

the patients. If this facility is managed similar to others I have

visited, a patient is NEVER outside the facility without a caregiver.

There is nothing to fear!

Thank you for the support across the miles. I appreciate your letter,

and 's letter. I don't even know where to begin with my words, to

put them in letter form. If any of these " fearful " people had any

knowledge of an Alzheimer's Unit in Des Moines (or West Des Moines) they

would know it is required by state law to have a privacy fence (with

specific dimensions) surrounding the perimeters of the unit. The front

of the facility will be open, but locked, and any other doors, including

patios are surrounded with a privacy fence. Ignorance baffles

me...appears to me that these people should do a little more research

before they open their mouths.
