What could be causing my heartburn? It seems like my thyroid is pushing up

against my windpipe,

or something.

Anyway, this heartburn last ALL DAY LONG!

I've finally started taking Pepcid, which kind of helps. But not much.

I am afraid to eat anything in fear that I will have more heartburn.

What's up? Anyone know? It's been going nonstop for 4 days now.

I had this one time before, and the Dr gave me some Previcid? Only took it

two times and stopped

cause the heartburn went away. (Plus I thought it was my thyroid, not heart

burn)

One thing that has definitely improved for me during this last yr (2004),

from better thyroid treatment, is that god awful GERD I had been having for

the last 3 yrs before that. I think that all that Pepsid AC I was taking,

along with very low thyroid, was the main reason for my folic acid

deficiency, so I would not want to go there again at all. Lynn, refresh my

memory, didn't you have a trachea that has been pushed completely over by a

very large goiter or a nodule, one??

did anyone diagnose you with an inflamed thyroid? I know mine feels like it is....how do you get that confirmed by a doctor?

No my thyroid is/was inflamed, but since I switched to Synthroid/cytomel it

seems to have shrunk.

I do have my regular GP tweaking my meds, which may have caused this GERD?

It is God awful, though!

I will have to practice patience, I guess.

I have Hashimoto's. Besides feeling the thyroid sqeezing my neck, I

also had an ultrasound,

fine needle aspiration, and blood tests which all confirmed the

Hashimoto's.

I had a major flare up for about a year, and finally changed my

medication from Armour to

Synthroid/Cytomel.

I would love to stay on Armour, but I think for me, personally, it made

things worse.

It could also have been that I wasn't on the right combination of

T4/T3.

Now I am on Unithroid/Cytomel. I don't want to take Synthroid, it's

over priced, and over

prescribed! (my opinion only)

I'm not sure if the pressure is my thyroid, or GERD. It all feels

like pressure from my neck down

to my chest.

We'll see of this Protonix will help????

Lynn,

I just wanted to let you know what my experience was with Protonix.

I was dizzy the entire time I was on it, sometimes horrible vertigo.

I am now on Omeprazole (generic Prevacid I believe) and while it is

maybe not as powerful as some of the others, it takes care of the

majority of the problem. Just wanted to warn you, in case the

dizziness happens to you. Then you'll know it's the Protonix. Good

luck!

Hi Lynn,

My dr recommends taking betaine hydrochloride for heartburn. He said

many people have low levels of stomach acids. You might want to get

tested to see what your levels are before trying it.

He said to start off taking either betaine hydrochloride-pepsin or

glutamic-acid hydrochloride-pepsin. Start taking one " 10 grain " (650

mg) before each meal. After two or three days, if there are no

problems, take two capsules or tabs in the early part of the meal,

then three capsules or tabs several days later. The dose is gradually

increased in this steplike fashion. Most people find their optimum

dose is to be five or six capsules with each meal.

Do not use this with aspirin since it may cause stomach bleeding and

ulcer. I use it and for more info, check it out on the internet.

Good luck!

Lynn,

I had severe heartburn every day and took prevacid. It was

wonderful, but since I have started taking Armour Thyroid I don't

need the prevacid everyday. I am actually down to taking Tums on

rare occassions.

-I am new to this Group and am interested because we thought our

daughter who is sixteen had a thyroid problem. We have had tests

and last year she was on synthroid for goiter which has now gone.

She is now off the medicine and we will wait and see what happens.

She seems to be doing fine. Just a note, as I was reading your

post about HEARTBURN, I have found that a tablespoon of vinegar,

malt or white vinegar, taken any time during the day will ease the

heartburn. Just give it about 30 -45 minutes to work. Much better

than prescriptions.

Hi there!

Did the doctor give any reason as to why he took her off of

Synthroid? These conditions do not generally go away, except in

very rare cases (pregnancy-induced thyroid problems can stop suddenly,

as can euthroid sick syndrome). Lack of thyroid support can

affect your daughter's growth patterns, not to mention her ability to

function.

The vinegar idea sounds great! I wonder exactly how that

works chemically.

Best--

Courtenay.

Hi Lynn,

When I first started getting symptoms was right around the time my

entire health " crashed. " When it first happened I had pain so

intense it was going straight through to my back and I thought I

might be having a heart attack. I was also having gall bladder

problems at the same time. After an endoscopy, a doctor determined

that I had two ulcers, rather high up in the stomach. I didn't know

ulcers could be up that high! Or rather hurt that high up! I quit

taking advil immediately and started on protonix and then aciphex

until the ulcers healed. I was dizzy the whole time and attributed

it to my overall health but once I got off the protonix, the

dizziness cleared up. My symptoms are now just occasional, thanks

to the Omeprazole. Heartburn rarely now, but sometimes pain in the

esophagus after I take iron or sometimes other pills. Tums seems to

help that.

It's possible that you could have developed an ulcer, or sores on

your esophagus, if acid reflux has been going on for a very long

time. Have you seen a G.I. to get an endoscopy? It was painless

and I don't even remember it. Does your pain hurt through to your

back?
