of responses, then if the child or adult in question does NOT know us, would

I don't think so. In the case of the child/adult not knowing who the person

trying to help, I really think it's necessary to find away to insure his or

her safty without damaging all the hard work it's taken to get them to

protect themselves by not going with strangers.

I think everyone has to ask themselves, Would I want my child to completely

throw out all that hard work because an aquaintance who knows who my child is

kept insisitantly telling the child that he had to come with her/him because

his mom would want him to? That's supposedly what we try to teach all our

children NOT to do. So in some cases like when the person involved does not

know you it would be best to keep him/her safe without damaging the

protective system the parents have put in place.

Perhaps some discussion on ideas of how to do this would be a good idea. How

do we keep them safe while waiting for an authority figure whom the

child/adult has been taught to trust comes to take control?

As I stated on another list a woman who works in one of the group homes that

my daughter worked in last fall , knew who the young man with DS was and

where he needed to go when he had missed the last bus from McD's home one

night. She chose not to take him into her car (which would have been the

easiest solution) and drive him home BECAUSE he didn't KNOW her, instead of

taking him and letting him think it was ok to get in strangers cars because

they said they knew him and where to take him, she helped him call a taxi and

made sure he had the fare. He was also taught how to do this himself

following this incident, and they talked to the cab company to arrange a way

to pay them if he doesn't have the fare. :-)

Hope that's understandable. :-) It's a very hard situation to be in, but

there are different things that need to be thought of when handling it all.

I think Trish did the right thing since she did know the young man and

presumably her knew her. Yes it would be different if they were strangers.

This is where cell phones are handy, she could have kept him in sight and

called the police. As I told her, my husband had a situation once when he

saw a little girl walking along a busy road in a fairly rural area. He

didn't want to pick her up, being an older man, but he drove along beside her

to protect her until she got where she was going, not far away. She had run

away and was going to see Grandma. (She told him where she was going). Then

he went in with her to make sure it was all right. This would also be a

possibility, but since this young man was on a bike and not just riding along

the road, it would have been hard to do that. Under the circumstances I

think Trish did the right thing. Jessie

Jodie has a boyfriend? LOL

Trish all I wanted to do was point out to everyone that at times 'protecting'

them can set them up to do something they've been taught not to do at a later

time. You have to use your best judgement at the time of the incidents, it's

a judgement call at that time, but we do need to be aware of the persons

safety and the unintended concequenses that may result in the type of

intervention we use.

PS Olympics, I ususaly end up falling asleep listening to the boring

commetators. ugh . and then the comercials.............but the action is

great! I really enjoyed watching the mens finals in the 100 freestyle relay.

had a wandering tenancy as about 2 years ago I found him out side the school

grounds on his own , the teachers were in a panic and I let them know where

he was, his father also told me he was found one day in a shop and another

time he was at the Ballina R.S.L which would be about 20 mins drive from his

house. If I see him again riding on his own I will phone the police and let

them know where he is....He also knew Jodie and wanted to see her......

This is not the first time this has happened as the police knew his name.

Again thankyou for your thoughts on this as I really appreciate this list

for their honesty ...

I am very aware our kids might be easy targets for weirdos ....that is

probably the thing that made me do what I did.....We are on school holidays

over here at this time and we live right on the coast so our population

grows heaps with holidays makers , you don't like to think it could happen

in your town but it did happen in a small community 1 hour away about a

year ago, a 15 year old girl was raped and murdered and left in the

bush.....it was the Xmas holidays....

Hope everyone is enjoying seeing our beautiful country with the Olympic

coverage......

Hi Jessie,

I never said she didn't do the right thing. I think I did point out that I

am aware that this boy knew who she was.

But I do think that we all have to concider what we may accidently teach the

child or young adult by doing something like this when the child doesn't know

us and then concider if the danger is imediate and requires intervention

right away or if we can hold their attention or like your husband watch over

them until they get where they're going or help arrives rather then letting

them get into our cars.

I really feel that what I pointed out had to be said to, I wouldn't have

ever thought about the issue this way if my daughter hadn't mentioned that

situation she did, all I want is for everyone to look at something like this

and access the danger and try to think of the best way to deal with it

without letting the child think it's safe to go into anyones vehicle.

Having said that I hope that the family of the boy Trish helped is teaching

him who he may except help from and go with, (i would think the police and

people he knows would be concidered ok), he would at least be safer when he

slips away.
