Cough

Hi -

I do not know if this helps you or not, but mom has always had a clear

runny nose and cough. While in N.C. she had allergies (or so we thought) and

would get severe sinus infections. These always threw her for a loop.

Looking back now I believe it increased her dementia symptoms (although we

did not know it was dementia at the time). The last two years under the LBD

diagnosis, we noticed her nose continue to run. She always had a Kleenex

handy.

It was not until she developed a fever and a diagnosis of aspiration

pneumonia was given. I did not know about aspiration and when I learned

that mom was forgetting to chew and swallow her food properly, it was a red

flag that mom's LBD was in full focus. Because of the pneumonia, she would

cough up some really yucky stuff. Since being in the assisted living

(Alzehimer's unit) she has already been treated for a sinus infection. The

cough was persistent and she was getting run down. She rebounded from the

infection pretty well and we are now coming to terms with the parkinson

symptoms of LBD.

I think Sandie notes that a runny nose and cough is part of LBD. It may

not be well documented, but I truly believe it is part of the disease.

Hi , your not alone in this as we noticed that my granda coughs quite a lot

and seems to have difficulty with this.

I checked the info that I have on LBD and there doesn't seem to be a link

although I do know that some meds cause saliva to dry and the airways can become

irritated by this.

My granda has this problem quite regularly and then other times all he seems to

do is drool.

Cough

Hi group, I have searched through the archives with no luck for info I

am looking for. My mother with LBD and my father both have colds. I've

noticed my mother is having difficulty coughing. It seems such a weak

effort. She does cough, but not enough to clear her throat or lungs.

She coughs like someone just after surgery who is guarding their

muscles. She is still ambulatory although slow. Maybe it is just weak

muscles, but I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this, and

is it part of the " package. "

Yes, . One of my many concerns is prevention of a cold for

this very reason. My husband last had a cold/upper respiratory

infection in November (probably catching it from our son) and it

lasted for weeks. Our Parish Nurse came twice just to listen to his

breathing and I took him in for a check with Dr. once during this

period to be on top of possible pneumonia. Right along with the

cough being weak, my husband also doesn't blow his nose with any

uummph! Think it ties together due to weak muscles and shallow lung

capacity or something?! When he would cough a great deal in bed

(probably combination of swallowing his pooled saliva as well as

congestion and " drip " down the back of the throat due to cold), I

made sure to turn him on his side and brace his backside with

pillows. The coughing would quiet down, he would fall back to

sleep, and the drooling would flow out the side of the mouth.

Seemed to work for him. Just some thoughts. Joy
