Atkinson, Ph.D., PolicyWorks, Ltd., Richmond A National Center for Education Statistics study found that 94 percent of public schools had zero tolerance policies in effect for firearms, 91 percent for other weapons, 88 percent for drugs, 87 percent for alcohol, 79 percent for tobacco, and 79 percent for violence (NCES, 1998). No study examining the nature and prevalence of zero tolerance policies in Virginia has been conducted, but there is no evidence to suggest that Virginia differs markedly from other states.
