Annie, if your CPU is only running at 0-3% then it doesn’t

sound like a RAM memory problem. Click on “C” and right click

properties to see how much hard drive space you have left. Once it’s

full, your computer can’t do anything. I ran into that on my external

hard drive, I didn’t even have enough space to delete folders. I had to

pick the smallest file I had and delete first and work up from there.

And if all else fails, have you rebooted? I find that that

fixes many things when there might be something stuck open in the background

running a loop.

That’s the extent of my knowledge.

Annie- what virus protection are you using, is it up to date - could be a

virus.

how big is your hard drive and what is being used?

agree, doesn't sound like a RAM problem.

Good news! I'm not sure what worked, because I was doing a number of things, but now Word and Outlook seem to be working again. Memory on C: is total 18.6GB, free is 12GB, so I think I have deleted enough pictures to put me back to where I was before the camera.... The bad news, is that the reboot tooke 9 minutes 30 seconds. I guess that is officially "forever", so there may still be a problem somewhere. I don't usually watch the thing start up or reboot...I start it and then go do something else. So I didn't realize it was taking so long.... Still hoping for advice on the external hard drive. Seems like that is the most sensible thing for storage of pictures. Just plugs into USB port? ....Easy to use?.... Access from both my laptop and my husbands? ... Any experience out there welcome. And thanks!Kathy Saradarian

The memory shortage was probably RAM memory and not hard drive space.

Sometimes RAM can get tied up with a program that doesn't close

completely and a reboot is the perfect remedy. That said, an external

hard drive for the purpose of backing everything up is probably a good

idea. Get one that sets up and automates a backup process. For example,

Perhaps more important, however, when it comes to computer

performance, you may want to check and make sure you have adequate RAM.

Here's everything you want to know about it:

Annie,

Your hard drive is inadequate for your needs. (Sooo last century.) I would recommend the following:

2gb flash drive to back up and have available your most important documents.

Hard copy on CD-ROM your My Documents periodically.

An external hard drive, the more memory, the better, should meet your needs rather than trying to replace the main hard drive. External drives up to 250 gb are now available.

Back the entire C:/ drive to the external drive periodically. "There is not in all America a more dangerous trait than the deification of mere smartness unaccompanied by any sense of moral responsibility."

Annie,

Congrats.

I back up onto 2 different external hard drives. (I keep one off

site.) They are amazingly cheap and small now. Yes, you can

use it on more than one computer. The ones I got at Costco don't

require their own power cord, but use a powerered USB2 on my laptop,

which is convenient if you have that (has a symbol like a dot with 3

arrows coming out of it). They are great for photos and music (if

you do Ipods), which take lots of memory, in addition to regular

documents.

For the AC people that back up themselves, do you back up the whole AC

folder, or which specific sub-folders?

On line back up is now so cheap - I read the NY Time Pogue review, now back up on Mozy for about $5.00 month. Keeps me from having to keep moving that second hard drive around. The AC files are quite small except for the immense Imported Items file, which has large TIF or PDF files. You can choose items to back up or just back up the whole folder, because that's simpler. On Jun 17, 2007, at 1:57 PM, Sharon McCoy , M.D. wrote:Annie,Congrats.  I back up onto 2 different external hard drives.  (I keep one off site.)  They are amazingly cheap and small now.  Yes, you can use it on more than one computer.  The ones I got at Costco don't require their own power cord, but use a powerered USB2 on my laptop, which is convenient if you have that (has a symbol like a dot with 3 arrows coming out of it).  They are great for photos and music (if you do Ipods), which take lots of memory, in addition to regular documents. For the AC people that back up themselves, do you back up the whole AC folder, or which specific sub-folders?SharonAt 08:37 AM 6/17/2007, you wrote:Good news! I had no idea on-line back up was so cheap. I'll have to look into

that. Thanks.
