first, a few questions/comments-- what is your level of computer savvy? how comfortable are you with setting up a computer to do what you want? how comfortable are you with manipulating programs, eg adobe, paperport, excel, dragon, updox, ms fax console, windows, office ally, instant medical history? how will you receive information regarding your patients? how will you input data into the patient's chart? how will you send information regarding your patients, eg, prescriptions, letters of referral, chart notes? will you keep paper copies of your charts? how much money do you have to spend? do you want all the bells and whistles? what features are necessary, and which are bells and whistles? might you switch to another program later on? do you have patient data to import from another record? how will

you do your billing? will other programs interface with amazing charts? can i try it out for free? can i call and talk to "them"? are there updates, and how much are they? how much technical support will you need, is it available, and how much is it? is there training available and how expensive is it? do you have to buy "their" hardware? ideally, i would look at how you imagine your office to be, and how you want to do it. pick out the essential features that you must have, and then shop for it. i did a lot of research into this, and came up with amazing charts as the best bang for the buck; i got it in 2002 when it was $250, now it's up to $1000, plus annual fees of $250 each for offsite backup and updates. i believe the lab interface is an additional one-time fee. i still think it's the best bang for the buck. does it do everything i want? no. does it do enough of what i want the way i want to do my job effectively and get paid for the work i do? yes. are there features i want which are going to coming out? yes, on an ongoing basis. what features would make it even more powerful? a more robust practice management function, including accounts receivable; a chronic and preventive care registry; a bidirectional lab interface; a better interface with office ally; movement of the database into sql, which will make it faster/better. are they coming? yes, with time. am i happy with amazing charts? yes, i am; nonetheless, i email jon bertman all the time with suggestions and requests. the squeaky wheel gets the grease. i am also an alpha and beta tester for amazing charts; i receive no money for my efforts.
