We went to Darango, Colorado. My son is 14 and loves trains, storms,

and Nascar. We went on the Silverton Narrow Gage Railroad trip. It

was a 4 hour ride to Silverton then another back. RJ, my son had a

blast and enjoyed the train. If anyone wants to try it take the trip

up to Silverton then the bus back, 8 hours was a long time to be

enclosed. We took the open air carriage and RJ had a great time

making fun of his mom covered in soot. Yes it is a steam engine and

be prepared to get dirty. We created a wonderful memory and I would

recomend this trip to anyone that has an Autistic child with an

obsession with trains.

Yellowstone is fun, and you should plan on visiting or staying in the Grand

Tetons while in the area.

On the topic of vacations, I'm about to head back to AZ for Kris' Camp, a

week-long intensive therapy camp for children with autism. Kris' Camp is a

non-profit organization lead by a group of dedicated therapists from around the

country. Children on the spectrum receive individualized therapies from 8:30 am

until 2:30 pm, while their siblings attend sibling camp (perfect for young

children) and parents can enjoy a much deserved break from it all.

The AZ camp is held in Oak Creek Canyon just north of Sedona. Kris' Camp also

holds camps in CA, CT and FL. I will be speaking with them about potentially

expanding next year in TX. I am new to Austin and am looking for ideas for

locations that would be suitable. In AZ the camp is held at a place called Don

Hoels Cabins. There are just enough cabins to house the participating families

and the therapists. There is a recreational area used for therapies and group

meals. It's a beautiful location with plenty of hiking, fishing, or shopping in

Sedona nearby.

You can learn more about Kris' Camp at www.kriscamp.org.

In addition to finding a great location for camp, I hope to generate interest

among families who might want to attend. Please feel free to call or email me

with suggestions or questions.

We travel in an RV and this allows us a home base which works really

well. The altitude didn't seem to bother Matt which was surprising. Have

any of you gone to Yellowstone or any other national parks? Did you

know you can get a Golden Access card and the whole family can get in

for free to any national park? I'd love to hear your stories. Trina

Hi Trina, we have been to a few of the same places. We went to the Monterey

Bay Aquarium, and Roaring Camp (was that in Felton just outside of Santa

Cruz?), we also went to the Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk my son initially had

some difficulty with the noise/echoes but enjoyed it after adjusting, also the

Mystery Spot in Branciforte in the foothills of Santa Cruz cool-weird place

(all of these attractions are in California about 75-100 miles south of San

Francisco). We did these things without special passes because we wanted to

see if my son could tolerate it without special considerations and he did okay,

my poor mother on the other hand needed help getting through all the many,

many exhibits at the Aquarium because she has rheumatoid arthritis and it

proved to be too much walking for her but the place had wheel chairs. I would

be

interested to know of fun places and attractions between San and

Houston/to Galveston that are ASD-kid friendly since there's not much summer

time left before school starts back. C.Reece

We went to the Grand Canyon in 2004 and the park employee at the entrance gave

my son a lifetime pass for free. He asked who was diabled and we explained that

he had autism. He then wrote him a lifetime pas good for the National Parks and

the Coprsof Engineers parks.
