Guest guest
forgive me for asking a basic question, but can a 5.5 yr old have an Asperger's dx yet? i was told at that age most professionals will use PDD-NOS and a true Asperger's isn't evident until Jr. high age. I'm asking because I have a friend whose worried about her 5.5 also but can't find anyone wiling to commit to a label. she needs such label to confidently move on- now she's doing nothing. thanks, lisa Social Skills Class Does anyone know of a social skills class that is offered in the Houston area? I have a 5.5 year old with Aspergers who I think might benefit from one. I'm actually in the Clear Lake area but could travel into Houston for a class. If you know of one, did your child like it, and/or benefit from it in your opinion? Thank you for any information you might be able to share, Beth
Guest guest
Have you attended the class in Baytown? Also, is this something that would be covered by insurance? I live in La Porte so Baytown is great! Thanks Albonetti
Guest guest
I know Baytown is kind of far from you, but there is a Therapeutic Play Groups and the phone number is, . There is also The River Performing and Visual Arts Center, they have classes in the fall and spring. This is located at 1475 West Gray, Houston 77019 and the phone number is . This is not too expensive, it is $100 per semester, fall and then spring. > > forgive me for asking a basic question, but can a 5.5 yr old have an Asperger's dx yet? i was told at that age most professionals will use PDD-NOS and a true Asperger's isn't evident until Jr. high age. Guest guest
It must be possible. I recently purchased a book called Asperger Syndrome And Young Children for people who know and care for 3-7 year olds. Guest guest
Yes, Aspergers can be diagnosed this early now. More is known about it. And the earlier the diagnosis, the better ability to provide early interventions that could make a big difference. --Beth
Guest guest
I have not attended the classes, a friend that has an autistic son sent me info on the classes, but they always seem to conflict with my schedule. I'll give you more info about the class though. The classes are for ages 3-7. I will keep and eye out for things. You live really close to me, so I might find something that would be helpful to you. Have you heard of the Autism Meetup? It is a group of people in the Houston area that meet and talk about thier children or themself and it is held at the Aim High Academy They provide a speaker that educates parents on different aspects dealing with autism in the school system and beyond. If you want to go, there is a meeting tomorrow night from 6-8. If you want, you can ride with me. But, I understand if you would be a little nervous about riding somewhere with someone you don't know. Sunetra T. ez Texas Child & Family Institute 6730 Independence, Suite 300 Baytown, 77521 You said your son has aspergers, right? and he is 5.5? My son is also 5 and I think he may have aspergers syndrome too. I go to Texas Children's in July, I am not sure if they will give a better diagnosis, right now he is PDD-NOS. They might as well say, I dunno. . . . Anyways, let me know about the meeting. Oh yeah, there is also a Baytown Special Rodeo you may want to bring you son to. It is such a fun day for the kids. This event is free and friendly to kids with disabilities. The date is September 9. I will insert the web-site. I almost forgot, I don't think it is covered by insurance, but it is not too expensive, I don't think. I hope I have helped some. www.specialrodeo.com mjalbonetti@... wrote: Have you attended the class in Baytown? Also, is this something that would be covered by insurance? Guest guest
Personally I think the signs are there, but the diagnosis is usually made around 6 when the child can't get along with other kids at school. The usual pattern is for the kid to be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, then perhaps a mood disorder like bi-polar as he gets older, then finally winding up with Asperger's. Autism is supposed to manifest before 3 years of age, yet most practioners who were diagnosing when we were going through all that claimed that you couldn't have an autism diagnosis until after the age of 3. Personally I think it has to do with the fact that the majority of docs aren't really trained in the signs and so don't know what to look for. Ask your doc if he's doing the CHAT (Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) or M- CHAT (modified CHAT) or the First Signs screening or using the Australian Scale as his screening tool. If you get a blank look, he doesn't really know what's he's talking about. S. Guest guest
Beth, I heard Kling speak at a recent meeting of We Speak, a new support group in Clear Lake. Ms. Kling does social skills groups for children, teens, young adults, and mature adults in Friendswood. She currently does not have a group for younger kids, but you might want to get in touch with her at . www.behaviorplus-texas.com <http://www.behaviorplus-texas.com/> . My grandson is 3, and I am happy to know someone is doing this in our area. If you are interested in We Speak, contact Margo at bpositive4life@.... Hope this helps.
