You need to visit or call your local social security office to start the process. HOWEVER an educational diagnosis will probably get you denied. They're going to require medical documentation that his diagnosis prohibits him from performing the tasks of everyday life for him to qualify... Guest guest
My son received his medical diagnosis from a child psychologist. The neurologist we saw was a waste of time. Although I've seen posts of others who have had positive experiences and gotten a diagnosis from a neurologist. Ours acted like he didn't have the time of day for us. Guest guest
Schools don't diagnose. Why they have diagnosticians is a %^ & *(#$ mystery to me. Schools assign an educational label so that a child can get special education services. It seems like a small point, like a language game, but there is a difference, as you may be aware after trying to get insurance and other service with the school label. A " medical " diagnosis (remember autism is considered 'officially' to be a psychiatric disorder, a mental illness. The DSM-IV is where the description is) can be had from a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a neurologist or a developmental pediatrician can give the diagnosis. The best (IMO) is a psychologist working as part of a multi- disciplinary team at a clinic. There some things that should be ruled out first medically (like seizures) and a couple of serious genetic disorders, metabolic disorders. . . . . . . .. That said, kids qualify for SSI only if the family can qualify for Medicaid AND only if their skills set, physically and verbally and self care wise if a couple of years behind their same age peers. A three year old whose not talking, is not going to qualify usually because a child isn't considered officially speech delayed until they aren't really talking by 5 or so. We're talking the government model for what constitutes provably disabled NOT best proactive practices. Also know that many people who have strong cases to be qualified for SSI are often rejected the first go round and then accepted when the case is sent back for appeal. Good luck with your application. Re: What steps do I need to take? Who would we need to take him to for a medical diagnoses? The school district has diagnosed him. Guest guest
Our son has seen his neurologist since he was 2. He had to take seizure meds for 2 years. He has a great neuro. Would it take his neuro to diagnose him? So what you are saying is if we get a diagnoses from his neuro it could be hard for us to get insurance for him. Would that still be the case if the school diagnose him which they have with PDD/Autism? With SSI are you saying only the low income can qualify for it that has a child with PDD/Autism? Guest guest
His neuro COULD diagnosis, however you may be better off withOUT an autism diagnosis. Since Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism/PDD-NOS/ Asperger's) or ASD is a PYSCHIATRIC or mental illness, the insurance will usually only pay for services rendered by a psychologist. You could get more services paid by the insurance under whatever other diagnosis the neurologist gives him. A diagnosis of ASD will NOT get you speech, OT, or PT paid for by the insurance. Is the child currently not insured?? Who is paying the neurologist? If the child has an identified seizure disorder since he was two and doesn't have insurance, you may have trouble getting him insured anyway. SSI is ONLY for persons with disabilities from low income families. I believe the income limit is actually slightly lower than it is for qualifying for Medicaid. You may know of persons with disabilities from higher income families who receive SSI. That's because, upon turning 18, the person with a disabililty becomes an independent adult who has no income and thus qualifies. S. Re: What steps do I need to take? When we qualified three years ago it was $2800/month. It may have changed since then. Your best bet is to call or visit your local social security office, or search their site at http://www.ssa.gov Love, Diane. http://babiesonline.com/babies/e/evankyle __________________________________________________
