Guest guest
Not so funny really. I stopped wearing make-up a long time ago, especially lipstick because of inappropriate male patient behavior. That was one of the things I was mentioning when saying I did the solo-solo thing but at times it was creepy for me and at least one patient said creepy for her. Brittney had good points. There is always that doctor that doesn’t belong to anything that no one really knows and rumors abound. We don’t want to be that doctor. WE want to know we are professionals, “normal” individuals who are just doing it differently. Pam sounds like she can run a commune practice and it’s working for her. I don’t see her style working for me because we are very different and if I tried to be Pam I would probably scare people. When you are alone with patient’s you must be very careful. That’s why many psychs have receptionists, not because of the phenomenal number of calls but to have a person there. And we see a lot of psyche patients. Guest guest
Can't resist. If I wore the anti-creepy clothing in Eugene I'd be kicked out of town. People like birkenstocks and more casual attire here. Weird is " in " style here. I think Portland Oregon got voted the weirdest city or at least there are bumper stickers all over the place " Don't take the weird out of Portland " I wonder what the old doc in Drain wears?? Who was the gal that started this creepy thread and where does she live? I think this comment may have some regional variation when it comes to clothing. Here is a thought. Does the white coat thing nest well with (multiple choice) a. high volume practices (God like image - churn them through) b. Low volume relationship model - get to know each other c. all of the above d. none of the above (I'm studying for boards so I can't help it) I wonder how many of us wear white coats. I haven't in 10 years. Anyone here still doing it? Do naturopaths wear white coats? how about naturopaths in NYC vs. Drain, Oregon? This is really very entertaining which is why I could not resist. Guest guest
No white coat here. But as I mentioned, I do dress pretty well most of the time. But interestingly I don't think there's any research to say clothing changes quality of care or doc-pt relationship -- and actually I do believe a solid percentage have a more positive image of doctors in coats... it's personal preference for some. Point is that just being " the doctor " and having the letters after the name while the other person is identified as the patient makes it an un-equal relationship no matter how hard you try. The goal should be that the respect between the two people allows for a healthy relationship that facilitates better life habits and well being. We have to make the environment fertile for a good relationship to do that. I know some really fantastic docs who are very bio-psycho-social and great with patients who wear a white coat. Guest guest
In the mountains of North Carolina, about 50% of docs wear white coats. I do not, but I have one, a lengthy beauty with those bolo-style knot buttons that I admired so much when I was on the surgical rotations. Then I adorned it with a pin from Disney World that has the Yin/Yang with Mousekateer ears! I saw an acupuncturist wearing this really cool white vest-like thing, which I have thought about making for myself. I like the pockets and apron-like qualities, but I do not like the long sleeves of traditional coats. I like ties, even with short sleeves, even if I look like I work at Sears. But I sometimes show up in sweats after I teach Qigong classes. I am generally traditionally conservative, but I wear what works for me, too. My practice is small and young enough that chaperoning has not been an issue, yet. But I do plan on making arrangements when I need to. I am in a small town, and I am involved in many areas, including a weekly health column that provides great recognition and credibility. I have also thought about resurrecting our local chapter of the state Society as a way to offset the hospital affiliation thing. I am a nerd, not a creep. If someone thinks I am a creep, I guess they go elsewhere. If I think someone is a creep, they definitely go elsewhere. I would consider myself lucky to be thought of as the out-there, off-the-wall doctor, but I am also doing what I can to also be thought of the one who offers now-unheard-of excellent service, quality and bullterrier-like steadfastness in helping my patients reach their health goals. You are all nerds, too, so get used to it. In that spirit, don't forget that Transformers, the Movie premieres July 4th. Guest guest
OK, now I can’t resist anymore. I read the studies that showed patients preferring white coats, and I blew them off. I said “the white coat can’t think, it just carries germs around” and I didn’t wear it. Then one day I was freezing. The office AC was going full blast and I couldn’t figure out how to stop it, so I put on the white coat, just for an extra layer. EVERY established patient I saw the rest of the day said something about the white coat, and every thing they said was positive. I’ll let Ms Puffer (yes, that’s her name and she’s about 85 years old) speak for them all: she said “Oh, Dr. Skaggs, you make me so proud when you wear your white coat. I know you take good care of me, but when you wear your white coat, I know everybody else knows what a good doctor you are too” Well, that did it for me…. I’ve been wearing the white coat every day ever since. I used to fuss that wearing a white coat over scrubs was like going to work in your jammies and bathrobe. Now I don’t wear scrubs, but I do put on the “bathrobe” every day and patients seem to really resonate with it. The other plus I’ve noticed is that when patients see me in the grocery or elsewhere out and about, they seem much less likely to recognize me without the white coat. Just today it saved me from having to discuss a patient’s husband’s edema at the polling place when I went to vote in our local primary. The poll workers weren’t so lucky, but I slipped in and out unnoticed. My 2cents… Annie PS, I really like having pockets too Re: anti-creepy clothing Can't resist. Guest guest
I haven't worn a white coat since leaving residency although recently I'm considering it for the pockets... need a place to put my PDA.. there's not very many pockets in Aloha wear. In my old practice I did find that patients (particularly my colleagues) warmed up to me easier when I was dressed fashionably. Personally I would feel uncomfortable being alone in a room with a male physician wearing a stained button up shirt with buttons straining due to his obesity even if he had a tie on...for me it is good hygiene and a neat appearance...if that person looks like a slob then I wonder how clean his hands are. Guest guest
hello everyone. i wear a white coat because i am only 5 feet tall and it makes me feel important. besides, it protects me from bodily fluids whenever i have to squoosh a zit or a sebaceous cyst. i handwash the dirt off the sleeves and heavy starch it, and have it engraved with my name and practice name so i would look smart. but mostly, i wear it because i want to wear short sleeved shirts in the 110 degree heat outside and i easily get cold inside the office. and i have to wear my polished black leather shoes all year because they have my $300 orthotics in them. i dont think white coat means anything but i probably would not wear scrubs or sweats to the office. grace > > I haven't worn a white coat since leaving residency although recently I'm considering it for the pockets... need a place to put my PDA.. there's not very many pockets in Aloha wear. Guest guest
I have never liked wearing a white coat because they are too heavy. I tend to put things in the pockets, no matter how much I say I won't. Pretty soon the thing is hanging around my shoulders giving me a headache. Guest guest
All this talk about clothing so I decided to go out and buy a new outfit to wear today. I hate shopping so you guys have had an effect on me. Still no white coat. Another interesting perk since I have no staff and work 3 half days per week. I keep my outfits in my office, bike in, and change when I get there. Nobody knows I am wearing the same outfit all week!!! Saves money on clothes, laundry detergent, etc.... I can dress grungy the rest of the time in Eugene style.
