Guest guest
OK, since someone brought up solar power. My husband just spent a fortune on LED lightbulbs. Supposed to last practically a lifetime, use no energy and provide good light. Anyone else go this route? We lasted less than a week and most are now replaced with florescent light bulbs. Start dim but get bright. The LEDs were no better than a candle although no fire hazard. I live in the woods, solar power is questionable although it would be nice. Can you run a furnace off solar? Or just retro fit for effciiecny and use cheap wood heat Caulk everyhwhere Close off rooms Insulated curtians foam inthe sockets etc Useing compact flueoescents youmust buy decent brands I have bought cheapos at home depot that were worhtelss But the bulb in my kitchen was put in 10 yrs ago and still shines!! I have lots of compact fluorescents. I hope you are recylcing paper from your office! And sending back yourtoners cartridges? AND WHAt about those evil styrofoam boxes anyway that vaccines comein?? err! RE: Dumpster Diving and other off topics OK, since someone brought up solar power. Guest guest
Our solution to the " bad " styrofoam boxes for vaccines is to take them to the local packaging company that mails things for people and they re use them for mailing whatever need to be in styrofoam and kept cool, or that is what they tell us. We have used fluorescent bulbs for over 10 years and still have some that are still hanging in there. They have definitely gotten better over the years. I even recycle the table paper if it is doesn't have biohazard type fluids on it, as well as shredded paper. Guest guest
I don’t know how to keep those Styrofoam cooler from ending up in the landfill, but before they get there I take them home and when there is a need (death in a family, house burns down, whatever) I pack one full of ice, bottled water, frozen food, etc and give them away.. Probably not a real solution, but it makes me feel better Annie RE: Dumpster Diving and other off topics OK, since someone brought up solar power. My husband just spent a fortune on LED lightbulbs. Guest guest
Re: the “evil Styrofoam” (capitalized because it’s actually a brand name, like Kleenex) … You can try www.freecycle.org to see if anyone wants your Styrofoam (Ramona, aren’t you the one who told me about this?) Also, there’s actually an Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers at http://www.epspackaging.org/info.html. The site has a link to a pdf of EPS Recycling Drop-Off Locations (EPS = expanded polystyrene), and the webpage also lists a way of mailing your EPS to a recycling site if there’s not one near you. You can actually mail in “biomedical coolers” intact, or you can break them up into small pieces for mailing in a box (I suggest doing the latter when you need to take your frustrations out on something). Guest guest
Yes, and I have had takers for these boxes, who use them to deliver meals to shut-ins. They were thrilled to have the load that was piling up in my EXTRA space! Also our new VFC contractor will actually have the empty boxes picked up (they include shipping label) so I just leave out for the post-woman to pick up. By the way, freecycle is a great resource for all kinds of things: desks, office furniture, computer parts, even a free (working, so far) autoclave! Part of the low overhead model for me….now if I can just sublet that extra space that I have! Ramona Ramona G.
