To be fair to the doctors: they > are doing their best to fit their own specialities to many > autisms; while there is only the beginning of understanding what > to call the differences. Absolutely . Each doctor has their own approach and understanding of autism. They all have their own ideas of what autism is and isn't and treat accordingly. One set of doctors thinks it's all metals and will treat as such, another set thinks it's all gut and will treat as such, etc. But I think they all look at individual needs, too. They just do it within their own parameters. > > To be equally fair to us: we have to try it and see how it works > out, if we can afford it in terms of time and $$$: one damn thing > after another. Absolutely true, again, . We can't go broke trying to find the answer but there's no sure way of doing that. The only thing we can do is research as much as we can to see what fits our child the best for that moment in time and go from there. I didn't (and still don't) have money to throw around at different doctors. I chose to try some of the things that DAN would do as our gauge of response to DAN. If he had gains with any of them, we would have stuck with DAN but he didn't so we moved on. It still cost us a lot of money but not near the amount it could have cost us had we gone to a DAN initially. You have to simply start with lots of research and hope for the best. It was pretty clear for us that DAN wasn't the right road. I read Dr. Shaw's book from cover to cover several times (along with many others) and tried many of the things in there that I could do without a doc and it simply didn't work for us. There was no great moment of clarity for us that said " this is it " . We hoped and prayed it would but it didn't and at least we had a pretty good idea (nothing is ever certain) that it wasn't going to work out for us and at the time, we didn't know about Dr. G. We just kept researching and researching. I actually learned about Yasko before I learned about Dr. G but I simply couldn't afford it. I liked her theories and methods but there was no " AH HA! " moment still. When I did finally learn about Dr. G, it was like a light bulb went off in my head because it just seemed to fit my son so well. That was our " AH HA! " moment.
