Nearly everyday we share with each other the problems and challenges we have with our children on the spectrum. It's great to hear about the " miracles " and the milestones reached, even if they are delayed. I write down on the calendar all the little miracles and milestones my son has, like the first night he slept without a pull-up, and another time at 3:00 am I heard him go potty, flush the toilet and then go back to bed, and yet another time while I was sitting at the computer reading 30 new posts he was in the kitchen helping himself to a turkey and cheese lunchable and a boxed drink. These are some of those brief moments of real happiness and joy. R.
Guest guest
Candis, That's a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing it with us--I LOVE to hear great news like that! a Miracle... Hello everyone, I wanted to share a little big miracle with you. I have two daughters, one is 14 and one is 13. The 13 year old has PDD. She needs help with tons of things. She talks some, because I have taught her various things. So cannot hold a conversation, etc. She does not know how to cook or anything like that. I was cooking ( and I can't remember even what it was!) and she came in from being with her grandparents and sister and went to the refrigerator and took out chicken nuggets and then took out a pizza pan and put the chicken nuggets on it and turned the oven on and put the nuggets in the oven and threw the empty package away in the trash!! I was in total shock! I had just witnessed a miracle!! It was truly something!! She has been laughing alot at things she thinks are funny- like American's Funniest Home videos!! That has been a pretty big deal for me for the last couple of months. I hope this continues. It also makes me wonder if Autism could be what I have always referred to it, but literally- a 'detour of some neuro paths'. I'm not talking about cause, but results of damage. She made prepared those chicken nuggets like she had done that before. NO prompts, no effort. Anyway, just sharing a little joy;) God is SO GOOD! Guest guest
Candis-- How fabulous!!! And I will share one of my own--my son has been having lots of ups and downs lately, but we took a chance and put him in the city league baseball for his age group. It's been a stretch, but at the second practice (I wasn't there and heard from his dad), he got his first hit from a pitch--now he's getting them regularly. And last Tuesday at practice, (again I wasn't there) I caught 3 pop flies--this from the kid who hates having the glove on his hand caught 3 balls and all his team mates cheered him on!!!! Wow. I feel really blessed. Wishing everyone a blessed and peaceful Easter (or Passover)!! S. Miracle... Hello everyone, I wanted to share a little big miracle with you. Guest guest
I love hearing the miracle stories and hope to have many of my own in the years ahead. We are still very new to this whole thing! This is a great, encouraging article about adjusting to the idea of having a child with disability. It's not long and it's a great description of another mother's experience. - WELCOME TO HOLLAND By Perl Kingsley I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It is like this. When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip-to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo . The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting. After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, " Welcome to Holland. " " Holland?!? " you say. " What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy. " But there's been a change of flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place. So you must go out and buy new guidebooks. And you must learn a whole new language. And will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met. It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around...and you begin to notice Holland has windmills...and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy...and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of you life you will say, " Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned. " And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away...because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss. But...if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things...about Holland! ________________________________ From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy [mailto:Texas-Autism-Advocacy ] On Behalf Of Aliza Ratterree Sent: Saturday, April 15, 2006 11:44 PM To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Re: Miracle... Guest guest
We've had our share of miracles too. Deanna (15) finally began to converse about age 10 or 11. About that same time she began to sing, after 7 years of silence (the silence ensued after her last vaccination at age 4), and to study ballet (she'd loved that since babyhood, but sensory integration dysfunction kept her from taking classes until age 10). Now she participates in solo voice recitals and choir, ballet and jazz concerts. There are many more things that happened after we'd almost given up. J.
