Guest guest
This link will take you to State of the States for developmental disabilities. It's a wonderul look into what each state spends annually on developmental disabilities and services. You can even request a copy of it and they will mail it to you. http://www.cu.edu/Institute/stateofthestates/ Another great link is: http://www.ucp.org/medicaid/ This will give you the top ten list and top ten worst list of states that provide medicaid services. Guess what? Texas is DEAD LAST! So, if you have the time, you can compare these two links and then get a pretty good idea as to which states provide more services. I understand your frustration, I spend a lot of my time thinking about which state I plan on moving to and which one will best benefit my son and his future. Guest guest
Yes thanks for sending this. Now, find out who your state senator and representative is and start calling their office. http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/fyi/fyi.htm Take your son to see them. Leave him at their office for 30 minutes (at a parent meeting in Houston about 15 years ago a group of parents did this to MHMR officials to get them to not cut their respite. It worked.) Contact Adelaide Horn, the Commissioner for DADS (Department for Aging and Disabled) adelaide.horn@... http://www.dads.state.tx.us/news_info/executives/dads_org.pdf http://www.dads.state.tx.us/homepage/horn_commissioner.html There will be no change in Texas until every legislator and every buearocrat can put a personal face on this situation called autism. If there is every going to be any change it's going to have to be bottom up (parents pushing) and top down (legislators leading) because most buearocratic service providers in the middle are quite happy with themselves doing as little as possible (not the Fort Bend Texana folks--they truly are working really hard for as many people as they can and DADS is responding by auditing their program and telling them they spend TOO MUCH on services!!!). It's an education to go to some of these board meetings and here themselves pat themselves on the back for what a good job they are doing. Oh, that's something else, find out when your local MHMR monthly board meeting is and start showing up. If you can't find child care, take your son. These are public meetings and members of the public are usually allowed time to speak. Usually, no one shows up. Hang in there and channel your frustration at the people who can make the policy changes that will help you. Be the squeaky wheel!!! Good luck. S. Guest guest
Hello to all parents, I am an educator in a small Texas town and I am just as frustrated as you all are. I have over 200 hours of autism training and a master's degree in special education and my hands are tied. I have never been so disappointed in an education system as I have been in Texas. I spent 12 years in New Mexico and they are far more advanced in the education of special needs children than Texas ever will be. I will be starting my own consulting business hopefully in the next few months, so I provide the help and education for children with autism and developmental disabilities and their parents. I am so sorry that Texas is at the bottom of the list when it comes to serving children with special needs. I will pray for you all. Valarie --- Tammy Doyle wrote: > How old is your son? Guest guest
If I left my son. They ( the state, police and or CPS) would charge me with abandment. I couldn't even leave him when he was in the hospital. One partent had to be with him at all times. We had to move in, but the hospital provided NOT food, breaks or drinks for the parent(s). > > Yes thanks for sending this. Guest guest
I know this will not serve as immediate relief to you, but I am involved in a suit against the state over the lack of medicaid waiver programs. You can find information about the suit by doing a google search of my name. It is coming down to crunch time and so far it looks promising. The state has tried to have the suit dismissed and they've failed. They've filed an appeal and I'm going to Austin to be deposed next Thursday. It is my understanding that by April there should be a ruling and it looks very promising for us (the families). We're hoping they are ordered to allocate enough funding to remove waiting lists. In the meanwhile the only immediate funding that may be available to you, may have to come from In-home and family support through your local MHMR or MRA depending on what region you live in. This will provide you with 2500, there may be a co-pay depending on your income level that will be deducted from the 2500 and it will be disburse depending on your expenditure. This fund does cover Behavior Therapy, home modification, safety equipment, respite and other supports. Your local MHMR representative should be able to tell you if they have any funding left for the fiscal year and how to apply. Be very persistent and let them know about all the waiting lists your son is on. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail privately.
