Guest guest
We get MHMR services for 3 of our children. The oldest gets CLASS. She was on the waitlist for 12 years. We get General Revenue and In-Home and Family Support for 3. You call MHMR and get an intake. They evaluate the children and then tell you the services you qualify for. I found it all very easy to do. Also, 4 of our children get SSI and we had no problem at all getting that. We had to go to the medical evaluations and within 6 months we got retro checks and the medicaid started. They did take our income into consideration and they do not count the first car as asset. We own our home and that is okay also. Our income gets reviewed every year and we get an audit, so to speak. I send all the original materials and they send them right back. Do sign up for them though! Go through their insane process and see what they have. lisarosseisen wrote: Is anyone getting help from MHMR? Why would he tell me that, when they helped my friend get a free week of summer day camp for each of her 2 ASD kids? Guest guest
I can't speak for other MHMRAs, but I am in County, and I can tell you what we were offered. Our son went through the DMR process, and he was eligible based on his diagnosis of autism. If your child has had a verbal IQ test, it might be beneficial to bring that report, because for most children with autism, that score will be substantially lower than the non-verbal IQ score -- good, only for the purposes of gaining access to services, useless otherwise We were offered behavioral support and respite care. Respite is paid for out of general revenue funds, so families do not have to pay anything towards that service. It's not a lot, though. I think in home respite works out to approximately 26 8-hour days per year, and it works by having families select their respite providers and the providers are reimbursed about $8 per hour of care. There's an out-of-home respite option (community respite) as well. We considered the behavioral support option, too, because it does provide access to some ABA. Deb Grossett recently moved to MHMRA of County and has started a behavioral-based outreach program (I think it's something like the outreach program at BTTC through Texana MHMR). Based on our income, though, we would have had to pay for this service. Since our son already receives 30+ hours of intensive ABA each week, and since MHMRA would provide approximately 2 hours per month, I didn't really think it would gain us much to add that service. Guest guest
is exactly right. Getting state services can feel like falling into a " black hole " it is complicated and confusing. Having said that -- it is very much worth the time and effort in most cases to go through the process. First step is to make an appointment for " intake " . Bring proof of residency, and whatever supporting documents you have regarding your child's autism eligibility (through school) or medical diagnosis. Sign up for the CLASS list. Yes - there is a loooong wait - BUT, the more people that are on the list - the bigger message it sends our legislature and the more money they toss at it each year. The way it was explained to us (and seems to be working for our families) - if your child has an autism eligibility - then they can potentially qualify for services from both the MH and MR sides. You want to speak with your local MHMR coordinator to help you work the system. Also - most services are provided on a " sliding scale " . If the fee quoted is too high, just keep saying - " I can't pay that " - they will keep working with you.... on county seems to have received an influx of funding this year - and if they don't spend it - not only do they lose it - but it will be harder for them to get the same amount next year (don't you love our government). So, please - I encourage anyone who hasn't to sign up for CLASS and go to MHMR for an intake appt. The only thing to lose is time. Shanna > Is anyone getting help from MHMR?
