Guest guest
Stephnia is an advocate in Killeen. You can reach her at: boo_stephania@... or Tonya ------------------------------------ Texas Federation of Families Tonya Hettler Trainer 7003 E FM 1294 Idalou, TX 79329 mobile: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/w-i-n ------------------------------------ New to Texas My name is , and I will be moving to TX in less than two weeks. My husband is in the Army, we are stationed at Fort Hood and I have three children. I have already contacted the SE department there and talked to a woman about what is offered for my son. He is three years old and has classic autism. Today while looking at the Killeen ISD website I found out that they only offer for him to go a half day in a general special ed classroom. The school he is in now in MD he goes a full day and is in an autistic classroom. At this point I am almost in tears. I came back from Germany over a year ago leaving my husband there because they did not offer what I though was good enough for Tristan. It has taken this past year to finally get my husbands compassionate reassignment done and him stateside again. I was so relieved that our family would be under one roof and that Tristan would get what he needed. Now I find this out. I know a few wives at the base, but their children are either infants, or not special needs, so they can't be much help. Does anyone have any information on what the school system actually offers, and if their are any private schools? This is the first (and I'm sure not the last) I've had to fight to get what I think my son deserves. I have no idea even where to begin. Thank you so much for any help you can give me. Guest guest
call TEA-Texas Education Agency in Austin and ask for the Special Ed dept and ask them to send you a side by side law. It's free. Get a 1 inch binder to put it in. Make sure you know all of the rules and hook up with a good parents group there. Feel free to call me. Guest guest
They have something called ECHO where you can get $2500 a month for ABA. I have just heard of this and am going to call tomorrow and see if Tristan qualifies. OK stupid question what exactly is Applied Behavior Analysis? Is it like speech, occupational, and physical therapy? He gets speech and occupational at the school he's in now in MD. And I was told he would get them at the school in TX as well. Is there other things out there that I don't know about? I'm very new at this and have pretty much have taken what the school gives in MD. Which has been very good and I can tell a huge change in Tristan. He now has almost constant eye contact, babbles, whereas before he was completely nonverbal. And is starting to have appropriate play with some toys. Thanks for the help! > > > Stephnia is an advocate in Killeen. Guest guest
What is ECHO and how can I get funding for ABA? I have two sons with autism and am running two home ABA programs that are very expensive! Thank you. New to Texas > > > > My name is , and I will be moving to TX in less than two > > weeks. Guest guest
We are new to this, too. We don't know what ECHO is, but ABA training is available for parents and teachers for free, through the Education Service Centers that the state dept of education runs. For example, Region One (South Texas) will have one 1/31 and 2/1 in Laredo, which we signed up to attend. This is to help us do ABA ourselves with our son. We have had to dig around quite a bit to come up with therapist, doctor, etc. in south Texas (we live on the border and health care down here really sucks). Don't get too discouraged, because if they have stuff way down here, there must be some resources up in the Killeen area! Good luck, Anya and Greg " Dr. Graham-Garza " wrote: What is ECHO and how can I get funding for ABA? I have two sons with autism and am running two home ABA programs that are very expensive! Guest guest
ABA is the most effective therapy for autism. I recommend that you read " Let Me Hear Your Voice " by Maurice - it is a great introduction to ABA. Here's a link to a website I read frequently when we first set up our ABA home program: http://home.earthlink.net/~abaantonia/Intro.htm Maurice's ABA manual " Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism " is also very good. > > > > > Stephnia is an advocate in Killeen.
