Should be encrypted if you are sending any "sensitive" email, but as far as I am aware, no court test yet.

Does anyone know what the legal situation is? I guess the issue is whether someone other than the patient has an

opportunity to see " sensitive " information... then the question of just

what is " sensitive " for each person is a whole other issue -- just

communicating that we are the person's physician could be " sensitive "

enough to deserve special procedures.

That is another thing about RelayHealth. Each person accesses the message

after entering their personal password, so it's nicely secure from others.

But beyond that, I also like that I can easily access all the old messages

for any individual patients.

Labs and xrays are being faxed to me. This works well for the most part, but occasional transmissions are defective.

Updox is working with me to correct this. I still have paper copies being sent to me as well. Hope to get rid of this step in the near future. May need to use a different fax server. I believe some are using ring central instead of onebox and not having any difficulty. I would like to get labs emailed but my hospital claims they aren't set up to do that although they do email labs to the hospital-based Next Gen system, so I don't know why they can't email to me.

I am starting to implement UpDox for secure email in my practice.

UpDox is a free standing application you download and run on your

computer. Your patients need to download it as well. Once the

patient's set up UpDox on their computers, you can send emails

directly back and forth securely using any regular email address.

You just have to click a "make secure" icon. You can think of UpDox

as your own little message scrambling device. When you send email

from it securly, it encrypts the email as it goes through

cyberspace. The recipient needs UpDox on their computer at home

to "unlock" the email. If they try to open the email from another

program, they get a message that states they need to download UpDox

to view it and instructions on how to do so. The secure email

function of UpDox is reason enough to check it our, especially given

the next to nothing cost compared to other secure email systems.
