Guest guest
Hey gang! Ok so i have 2 coworkers who are trying to rope me into running in this Corporate Cup 5K race in mid-October. We're allowed to bring family and friends to run with us, so if I do it, then Im gonna drag Leigh too hehe Anyway - I am really just looking for some feedback from the voices of experience. I think this would be a great physical challenge for me especially since Ive been working on building up my stamina and my running ability. They have a 6 week training plan (its like 5 or 6 days a week) but we'd only have about 5 weeks (the race is on Oct 12) to get ready. I know I can do anything I set my mind to, but Im a little nervous when I think about this!! So any input from ppl who have done these 5Ks - especially the less experienced (or you were at one time!) runners like me!! Just want to know what Im getting into if I sign up for it!!! Thanks in advance Amy

Just want to > know what Im getting into if I sign up for it!!! **My biggest advice for you--enjoy it. They are really a social gathering of running enthusiasts and weekend warriors. I found that my running time (like Andy's) has improved since doing HIITs. Go figure. But really just do your HIITS as usual, and I would say once each week before the run go out and run a 5K (or as much as you can building up to 5), time yourself if you are into that. Again, these runs are more social than competive (although you'll run into some of those too--they'll be the ones pushing to get up on the starting line--avoid these people!!) Plus, there's always a bash at the finish line, and vendors handing out free goodies. great way to try some stuff. And Did I mention they are FUN!! Have fun and who knows, it may be your next hobby. That's how I got started running--Bay Bridge Run 10K. I'm hooked. There's a group of us that enter and go to a different race each month. Good Luck, Dianne
Guest guest
Definitely do it Amy, you will be so glad you did! I have only done one 5K but it was a great goal to go for and I was a total rookie. My time was pretty laughable, cuz I was just starting BFL back then, but I finished and that's all that counted in my book at the time. I saved the newspaper that listed all the finishers too, very proud of myself. LOL Definitely drag Leigh along too, it's more fun with two. Jen B. > Hey gang! Guest guest
Ok, Dumb question. But how many miles is 5K? They have a 5 and 10K run in Tucson on September 16. I've thought about entering in the 5K. But just kinda want to know what I'm getting into before I sign up. Thanks! Ann V. Tucson, AZ

Guest guest
Amy, that's about 3 miles. How far do you think you can run now? You have about 5 weeks to get ready. Can you do running for most of your cardio? If so, I'd add 5 minutes each cardio workout until you are up to about 40-50 minutes. I'm guessing that you can finish in about that time, maybe better?? You can cut back somedays and I would advise not running 2 days before the 5K. If you do run, make it an easy workout. I run the occassional 5K and have been doing nothing more than 20 minutes of the hard cardio. Lucky for me though, since I ran a 5K last time in just a little over 20 minutes. I have one coming up on the Oct. 13th with the dog. Here's a link to an actual plan to prepare for a 5K, but you might have to speed it up a little since the plan is 8 weeks. I am betting you can do it even if you have slowly jog the whole way. http://www.world-marathon.com/training_5K.html Andyman > Hey gang!
