Guest guest
Hi Deb, California now frowns on putting meds down the commode. See article below.. Details about the dangers of flushing prescription drugs down the toilet The medicine cabinet is full of expired medications, and you want to get ridof them - but how?For many, flushing them down the toilet seems the easiest and best option, but pharmacists and environmentalists caution against it.Flushing medications - both prescription and over-the-counter - down thetoilet puts pharmaceuticals into the water system. That could haveconsequences, namely poisoning aquatic environments and contributing tobacterial resistance to antibiotics, said Ed Guerena, a local pharmacist andmember of the county Health Commission."More and more, (disposing of medications) is going to be a problem becausepeople are using more prescriptions than they ever have before, and there aremore drugs that will accumulate in the environment," he said..Most pharmacies won't take back old prescriptions because it costs them moneyto dispose of them. And throwing old pill bottles in the trash raises thepossibility that someone will find them and use the pills inappropriately, hesaid. The best option, he said, is to dissolve pills in water to make themunusable. Keep them in the original container but scratch off the name toprotect identity, wrap the bottle in duct tape and throw it in the trash."That's the best that we have, which is still not very good because it'sstill going in the landfill," where there's the possibility of contamination,Guerena said. Sorry this is off topic but any ideas of how to dispose of old medicines. I'v got quite alot to get rid of. Do pharmacies take. Thanks for any ideas. Not much liking the idea of putting in the sewer.ThanksDeb

Guest guest
We just had an article in our local paper that old meds could be dropped off at the local police dept and/or fire dept. Guest guest
Weeeellllll the only way that I know of is flushing them. And there was this study done a couple of years ago that there was trace amounts of many different type of drug in the water systems of many big cities. So I am clueless. I don't know if there is a safe way. Burning them might cause toxic fumes. Who knows but a good question. Guest guest
this answer may not be viewed upon favorably but medicines are expensive and some people are denied them because of cost. i know there are some free clinics that treat aids patients that collect the drugs of those who have died and they are given to people in need. maybe a little shady to give drugs to free clinics but it is done. Guest guest
I know when my brother died of HIV in 2001, my mom contacted his doc who gave my mom an address on the east coast where she sent the rest of my brothers left over meds and they use them in other countries to treat HIV there.. its certainly better than throwing them out and wasting them as they are very expensive.. Guest guest
-I don't think it's shady at all. Better for someone who really needs it rather than to let it go to waste. My former family doctor of 30 yrs. sometimes gave me meds that I would refuse to take after reading what the side effects " could be " and I would give them back to him so he would know I wasn't taking them. These included morphine patches, antibiotics, stomach meds. etc. He would give them to some of his patients who needed but could not afford them. I have no idea if it was legal for him to do so but I sure think it was ethical.-- In Hepatitis_C_Central , " Bob " wrote: > > this answer may not be viewed upon favorably but medicines are > expensive and some people are denied them because of cost. i know there > are some free clinics that treat aids patients that collect the drugs > of those who have died and they are given to people in need. > > maybe a little shady to give drugs to free clinics but it is done. >
