Guest guest
Hey le- Try to find a calcium supplement with vitamin D.....it helps enhance absorption. The citracal that takes is a good choice, but there are plenty similar generic brands out there, too...just read the labels and compare. People here on the list have mentioned calcium supplement with Mg (magnesium) help enhance absorption. I looked through some of my textbooks and couldn't find anything regarding that, but hey! it doesn't hurt!! Mg is water soluble which means if you get more than your body needs, you'll just pee it out. Please, whatever you do stay away from the calcium supplement that contain oyster shell or bone meal. The oyster shell or bone can contain lead or other heavy metals which are dangerous for your health. Also, another option that has worked out well for me on days when I don't get enough milk are those soft, chewable Viactiv calcium supplements. They contain vit D and half your daily requirement of calcium. I put my sister on them several years ago (she doesn't drink milk, either). If you have any more questions, you are very welcome to e-mail me. Jen Who let the nutritionist in her out again - sorry. I hate to be a " know-it-all "

Guest guest
Thank you so much Jen! This is just the info I was looking for and I'm so glad we have a nutritionist here for this very exact thing!!!! It's good to be a know-it-all, especially in this area where there are people like me that need all the help they can get. It's the " know-it-all's " that are obnoxious that are a little annoying - and we don't have any of those here. Don't they usually come in the in-laws section? LOL le > Jen > Who let the nutritionist in her out again - sorry. I hate to be > a " know-it-all "
Guest guest
Isn't there something though about getting too much vitamin D??? My mom takes one calcium pill with vit D in the morning and then another just plain calcium at night. le > Hey le- > > Try to find a calcium supplement with vitamin D.....it helps enhance > absorption. Guest guest
Hi le, Good question. You are absolutely right - vitamin D can be toxic in excessive amounts. It is a fat soluble vitamin which means that when we get too much vit D, the extra gets stored in our body's fat stores instead of being urinated out like water soluble vitamins are. However, you need to take ALOT of vitamin D for it to reach toxic levels - doses that are several times the recommended levels daily. Your body can also synthesize vitamin D from ultraviolet light (i.e. being outdoors) so it is not as toxic as some of the other fat soluble vitamins. Be sure to read the labels of the supplements you're shopping for. Try to find ones that contain no more than 150% of the recommended levels of vit D. those viactiv chews I was talking about each contain 1/2 of your daily requirement for vitamin D. If you get to the store and start looking at labels and find yourself confused, please don't be afraid to e-mail me with questions, I'll be happy to try to help. Jen Who is glad to know that nobody here is finding my " nutrition lectures " know-it-all in nature.
Guest guest
Good for you, Sandie! Even though the peak bone building years are in the late teens and early twenties - you still need a lot of calcium right now to prevent premature bone loss. I got the caramel flavor Viactivs. They are kind of yucky. If I pop one in my mouth and don't eat something right away after - I'm left with this icky after taste in my mouth. Do you have the same problem with the chocolates? I'm not complaining....they are very good as long as I avoid the after taste. Jen Who needs to eat soon as she hasn't had any calcium yet today and feel guilty isn't practicing what she preaches. LOL :-)
Guest guest
le, I take Calcium Citrate capsules from www.vitaminshoppe.com. This particular formula was recommended to me by a friend whose system is *extremely* sensitive and often unable to absorb nutrients. She couldn't say enough about this product. I started taking it at the same time I started taking a multivitamin powder, so it's hard to say what is making me feel differently. However, I trust my friend's judgment on this. I can't recall the cost, but Vitamin Shoppe's prices are reasonable...they send you coupons...and you earn points toward future purchases as soon as you make your first order. It's a good deal. ;-) F who still has close to 200 posts to catch up on since returning from up north
Guest guest
Sandie! LOL!! That's exactly what I do when the Viactiv tastes bad....I drink water like its going outta style!! And, when all else fails, I've learned that chewing and swallowing FAST helps, too! :-) Jen
