Kerri Sue, that's a very good idea, to take preventive steps at the

present time. If you got the diabetes gene, it might be inevitable for

you to get it, but you might be able to postpone it.

As far as diet, carbohydrates are the enemy. Diabetics cannot process

them correctly. It's not just sweets that you have to avoid, but many

other things as well, such as bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, etc. A good

rule is to not eat anything white, LOL. All plant foods contain carbs,

but green veggies such as spinach, broccoli, etc. contain a lot fewer

than most root veggies. Learn to read food nutrition labels. One

serving of carbs is 15 grams. Try not to have too many servings of

carbs at one time, but spread them out as much as you can.

You should have your doctor prescribe you a meter along with some

testing strips so that you can start testing. The crucial time to test

is after meals, because that is when your blood glucose will be higher.

If you decide to do this, I'll be glad to tell you the ideal parameters

to look out for.

If you have any questions about diabetes, feel free to email me

privately. I belong to a couple of great diabetes lists, which have

greatly increased my knowledge of the disease.

Good luck with your preventive measures.

Sue
