Hi KC,

First of all, Congratulations on a healthy baby boy :) Margie and you did a great job :)

Now, why will he be registered as 1/2 Jersey? Who was his sire?

I guess I forgot....

Also, where did the brindling pattern come from? Is it in Jerseys or in his sire?

Barbara

Hi all:

He will be registered with the AMJCA as 1/2 Mini Jersey and is for sale. He would make a great herd bull for some Mini Jerseys or to bring down the size of your small standards.

I hope to have some pics up by next week.

He is 1/2 Mini Jersey and 1/2 Lowline. When Jerseys and Angus are bred they are often brindle.

Thanks for the congrats. I'm a bit worried. He was all dry as he was born this morning and we just have a big storm come through. I went out at the first sound of thunder and opened the corral and told Margie to get her boy under cover. When it started to rain I looked out and she was half in the shelter, but he didn't know his way out and Princess was in with him, licking him. Margie went back to him. I hope he doesn't get a chill. When it stops raining, I'll go back out and towel him down.

Let's just hope he doesn't get sick.

Thanks for an explanation.

Let's just hope that he will be OK. I'm sure toweling will help.

I got him up on the shelter, toweled him down real good, but the wind was blowing and although being wet won't hurt, cold wind will. I'll keep a close eye on him and one hand ready to grab the Gentocin. Gave Margie some hay in the shelter, so she should stay there with him.

What teperature is there by you? When you towel him you make his blood flowing faster and that will keep him warmer. Being in the shelter will help too. Can you tether Margie so she stays there?

Don't have to tether her. She won't let him leave. I went out at 9 to check on them (mostly him) before it gets dark and he was nursing. I was so happy to see that. She will keep him warm. I gave him the pneumonia, inter-nasal vaccine this morning so, hopefully that, along with her good colostrum will help keep him safe.

It was in the 80's when it started raining, but then a cold wind came up. Like I said, I wasn't worried about the rain, just the wind chilling him. But, I rubbed him with a heavy towel and gave him a good rub down (could use one myself (LOL).

Just hope all is fine with him in the A.M.

It was so cute when I was getting him toweled down. Margie wouldn't let him go beyond the shelter. He would veer one way and she would block him, then he went the other way like he was going to go around back of the shelter and she blocked him again, so he laid down. She's such a good mom.

All is calm now and will probably be in the low 60's tonight.

Thanks for letting me know about the toweling warming him up. I didn't realize that. Guess common sense paid off again.

Thanks so much. The rain is over and dry skies are in the forcast for several days. I told a friend of mine that if he were 10 days old, I wouldn't have worried, but new borns need the best possible weather when you don't have a barn. I usually try to plan on calves being born later in the month and even into July for that reason, but this has been such a wet year, who knows what would have happened later. They say we will have rain all summer.

Anyway, thanks again and I should be able to post some pics by the end of the week......God willin and the crik don't rise, they come out decent enough to post.

He's a pistol. I tried to get Margie in for milking this moring and she would have nothing to do with it because Hermie Baby was being a brat and didn't want to walk up. Was running and playing, so I veered him up to the front and he kept veering off.

I didn't push the issue because I know the first 24 is a frantic time for Margie. I'll get her into the corral tonight and milk her there with him inside. Then, once we do that, she'll feel better and more relaxed.

AND, I'll take more pictures.
