sunshine and depression

, don't you mean 'lack of sunshine is *A* cause of depression'.sugar consumption can cause depression; or should i say it can contribute to it.what does one do in the winter? i understand the rays of the sun are not strong enough. CLO?that would explain SAD, or my winter depression.i LOVE winter, the cold, the dark, the snow, the ice, i just LOVE it.but i go to bed at 8 pm or so cuz i'm so tired, i stay in bed til 8 am or so, i sleep 10 hours or so, (i love to just lie in bed and listen to the radio even if not sleeping) and then i'm tired all day and don't want to do anything. unless there's snow! then i go cross country skiing and feel wonderful.but all winter long i wish i could just hibernate like a bear, and just sleep and read and eat (not cook) and listen to music. i get pretty much nothing done all winter and my house goes to hell.thanks.laura

actually, it is a contributing factor, if not *A* factor. Study done here at U Washington showed that depression is significantly decreased with 20 minutes of sunshine (plus exercise and good whole foods nutrition), and those depressed subjects had been getting insufficient amounts of each.

Hi Jolynn,

i know you are right. i have found being in the sun to be quite a mood

lifter.

but i still don't know what to do in the winter...

just hibernate, like i want to, LOL?

who's nuts! just kidding.

but seriously, i gave her a try a few years ago and she just plain

got on my nerves.

the rest of the year my house is fine; except for disorganized

papers. they are a chronic problem.

i learned on another web site, www.radiantrecovery.com, that

disorganiziation is a function of SEROTONIN levels in the brain.

this web site is devoted to identifying people who are 'sugar

sensitive', getting them off sugar in a wonderful baby step way that

really works and is not hard to follow, and most people find that

the 'house cleans itself'. meaning, they wake up one day and find

the house clean and organized; you did it yourself but it was such a

natural process you almost didn't notice.

when you go off sugar, serotonin levels naturally increase and

organization almost becomes a no-brainer. it happened to me; except

in the winter. and the papers. apparently my serotonin levels

increased but are still not optimal. probably hereditary; i'm a lot

like other family members. we're all northern europeans, including

irish.

along these same lines, there's a book, The Omega Diet about omega-

3's and how deprived we are. she said the stereotype about irish

people tending to drink too much is not necessarily a fallacy; that

the ancestors of the Irish ate fish as a mainstay of their diet; lots

of omega-3's. the irish don't eat nearly as much fish as they used

to. omega 3's, i believe, optimize serotonin levels; correct me

here, please. alcohol and sugar do the same only temporarily and

then there's a crash; not a good way to raise serotonin.

so someone suggested the other day that i take fish oil for

depression. i agree. maybe i should start taking it again.

but doesn't CLO do the same thing? or does it?

anyway.

You can get a sun lamp and just have it on in the kitchen or a room you are in for 15 minutes 2 times a day. Not to sit under, just for the rays to be in the room. Vitamin D helps as that's what you get from the sun.

I take the D, but the St. s Wort is a lifesaver.

there was something in the news a few years ago about st. johns wort

causing some kind of side effect, light sensitiviy or something? does

it do that with you? do you use it only in the winter? maybe the

benefits outweight any risks.

If you listen to all the bad stuff they have on the news about herbs and supplements, you would crawl into a hole and pull the dirt over you.

The only thing I know from researching it is that people should not take it if they are taking mood elevators like Zanax and anti-depressants that you need a prescription for. I've never encountered any side effects from it. It's doesn't hype you up or make you feel better like the drugs, just do feel better. I take the caps, but I was told the tinctures are better. Just don't know if I want take something that tastes that bad.

I've never had a light sensitivity from it or anything else I take.

SOME DAYS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A REALLY GOOD IDEA.
