Of course they did. Not only was it common sense, but they probably learned that form their North Korean friends. The North Koreas have tunnels all over their country hiding all kinds of things, mostly their military. Even though we have ground penetrating conventional weapons, it would probably take a nuke to wipe out a place like that. Even then it would have to be a hit right at the tunnel entrance to get the blast in there or a really big one to try to turn the mountain into slag, but even that isn't a surety and would cause lots of fallout.

I've been hearing though that this facility has been known about for some time but hasn't been mentioned. It certainly complicates things and puts the recent protests in Iran in a new light. Perhaps we should have supported them more heavily. There was an active revolt going on that could have been built on, much more so than Iraq. It still would have been a very messy situation all around though. Still, we are bogged down in Iraq, spent much of our international capital and would see little or no support (especially not from the large number of petty tyrants in the UN), and we would still also face resistance from the older crowd who still support the Mullahs.

In an unusually frank disclosure, Iran's nuclear chief said Tuesday the country's new uranium enrichment site was built for maximum protection from aerial attack: carved into a mountain and near a military compound of the powerful Revolutionary Guard.
