Hi Kelley and thanks for your response! I am just now coming to the conclusion

that 2 of my kids (at least) have OCD. I am now over whelmed w/the possibility

of having all my kids in therapy....how does anyone afford the time and money

for 2 or 3 kids in therapy?!

>

> Hello and welcome. I have two daughters with OCD and have it myself. In my

family, there is a strong genetic component for OCD--my father also shows BIG

OCD tendencies as does my aunt, my nephew and brother. As for Asperger's, I

have one of those too. My youngest (who also has OCD) has been diagnosed with

that as well. It is very common for folks with Asperger's to have OCD

tendencies. They frequently become preoccupied with a specific topic and often

have compulsions like lining objects up a certain way, etc. Because my family

has so much OCD, I really believe she has both. Her sister does not have

Asperger's. In fact, until my twin nephews came along (I have four nephews and

the one who shows signs of OCD is not one of the twins) and started showing

Asperger's signs, there was no one who appeared to have it. In a nutshell, we

have both OCD and Asperger's and in most cases, family members appear to have

only one or the other. I have the one daughter with both. I don't know if this

helps at all! My oldest daughter also has narcolepsy but that is an entirely

different story! I would talk to your doctor and let him/her know of your

concerns. Good luck! Kelley in NV

most likely have OCD. I've been reading posts on this list for awhile and they

describe my kids to a " T " . My question is: my kids also have traits common to

children w/asperger's (my 8 yo was dx'd w/this when she was 4) and they have

severe sensory issues. They are also super bright....how would I determine

whether they have OCD or aspergers? They seem to overlap in so many

ways....could a person have aspergers w/OCD or is OCD a part of aspergers? My

son is about to start therapy for OCD to treat severe oral aversions but I'm not

sure if we're going in the right direction.

Hi and thanks for your input! I was always sure that my son had sensory

issues, texture, chewing etc. But recently over the last yr (he's 6.5 now)

smell has become a BIG factor. His diet consists largely of bread/toast and

cheese. I came up w/a nutritional smoothie which he thinks is rice milk and it

is probably keeping him alive....he was hospitalized at the age of 2 for

nutritional deficiencies so the oral aversion is quite extreme. He cannot sit

in the same room w/someone who is eating something he finds distasteful...and he

finds just about anything that isn't bread or cheese distasteful. He's even

having trouble w/how people smell...this started today!

He also seems to worry about swallowing objects.... last yr he was using

toothpicks as armature for clay animals that he was making and he suddenly

started having " panic attacks " about swallowing the toothpicks...he'd ask me

what would happen inside him, how would he know if he'd swallowed one etc etc.

Now that he's lost a couple of teeth he keeps asking me to check his teeth after

he's eaten something. My husband thinks I'm overthinking this stuff and that

there's nothing amiss...am I?

Hi and thanks for your input! I've often wondered about PANDAS but what

are the chances that more than one kid in a family has OCD via this

route?....probably not very likely...

Did your daughter have any kind of behavioral therapy along w/medical treatments

or were the treatments enough by themselves?

Hi Barb and thanks for your input!

I think my son probably will fit into the nebulous PDD-NOS group too. He just

seems to have so much going on. My side of the family has OCD, bipolar, anxiety

and my husband has a mix too.

I have been to the OCD website and found that the group I'm going to tomorrow

has one dr listed as an OCD therapist...is it ok to ask about specific drs here?

I mean can I post a message w/a drs name and ask if anyone's had experience

w/that therapist? I just need to know if I'm going in the right direction

therapist-wise. My family just moved to Northern VA and I know nothing about

the therapists in that area.

That is a struggle. Both of my girls are in therapy and both take medication.

I take medication as well. Both girls see their doctors once a month now and

both of their doctors (long story about why they each have their own) are on our

insurance--now. The co-pays are not too bad. The hardest part is that they both

have different OCD issues and do not often understand that the other is going

through something difficult. I would think that they would have more empathy

but they don't always. They usually don't have meltdowns at the same time. That

is good and bad because sometimes their meltdowns are back to back. Then there

are times when they do help each other and support each other. It isn't as bad

as it sounds. We are who we are. I wish we didn't all have OCD but we do and

it does make life interesting. Hang in there. Kelley in NV

Hi, Bri. Just wanted to let you know that it is perfectly fine to ask about

doctors and experiences with anyone in particular.

I know it was addressed to Barb, but also know she is very busy with her local

group too, so she doesn't always make it in every day,. . . Didn't want you to

not have an answer before tomorrow.
