Guest guest
I don't know how close to NYC you are but Columbia University has a wonderful Child Anxiety center - but they also may know of folks, otherwise the OCfoundation.org website has resources (docs) listed on their website. Â Good luck we're rooting for you M Subject: Re:Is it time to see the doctor? Is it OCD? To: Date: Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 11:58 AM Â Thank you to everyone for the responses. I will be calling her pediatrician to let her know my concerns. Undoubtedly, this has been a change in her behavior, and that alone should merit a visit. I will keep everyone updated on what comes next for us,especially if the dx turns out to be OCD, I will need all of the expertise and support I can find. I've always heard people say, don't read about illnesses on the internet, you'll think you have every one you see. But when I started reading about OCD, I actually had a glimmer of hope that I am not just a complete failure as a parent. That we can help her, she doesn't have to feel there is no other way than anger and sadness. We are in Northeast PA, anyone else near here with any good Dr. recommendations? I will start by searching my insurance company to see if they have any psychiatrist/ psychologist (not in that order) we can use, if/when needed. Thank you all again! > > I think these are clearly things that kids with OCD do. Only a psycologist or physician can make the diagnosis but I would clearly jump on it. The longer you let it go if it is OCD, the worse it will get. It can totally engulf the whole family in a matter of weeks if left untreated. The good news is, kids can do very well with treatment (either just CBT/ ERP or combo meds and CBT). Start with her pediatrician but also start looking around your area for a psychologist who treats children with OCD and uses CBT/ERP (Cognative Behavorial Therapy with Exposure Response Prevention) for OCD. When you call to make an appointment , ask what methods they use to treat OCD. If they say anything other than CBT/ERP, say thank you and hang up. Get on this early because sometimes wait times to see a qualified person can be VERY long( several months). In the meantime get yourselves some books - a great series is the parent child series by Pinto Wagner- What To Do When Your Child Has OCD and the childs book Up and Down the Worry Hill ( depending on the age of your child- best for young children and preteen or early teen- older than that they will probably look down at it. The March books are also good. This group has a wealth of knowlege and support and are truely the only people who can really understand the fear and frustration you are going through. Even if it is not OCD, the techniques work well to modulate the obsessive behaviors. What area of the country do you live in? >
