My son at that age was the same way and his had to do with processing and not

ocd, but anyway, what worked for him may work with your daughter -- because it

is possible that the ocd is making her doubt herself.

 

Before he could ask any questions, he had to try to do the work by himself. 

The teacher assigned him a student buddy (really smart kid) that he could work

with and ask questions to in case he really didn't understand, but my son didn't

want to keep asking the other kid, only the teacher.  So he listened harder to

her answers and really tried to do the work by himself, and he was very

successful.

 

There was time at the end of class every day where it would be okay for him to

go to the teacher, but he rarely needed it.

Hello! My dd is 9 yrs old has OCD and was diagnosed 1 1/2 yrs ago. She has been

going to a wonderful therapist and has been doing really well, so well that

sometimes we forget that she has OCD. But lately she has been struggling with

math at school. Her teacher told me that she asks a question about a math

problem, she seems to understand, but then asks the same question over again a

few mins later. There is a student teacher in the class also and will ask her

the same question she just asked the 1st teacher. Her teacher says she feels she

lacks confidence in herself. Needless to say, I am meeting with her teacher this

evening to discuss this AND tell her about OCD. I have not had to tell anyone at

school up to this point, she was not having problems there. My daughter did not

want me to mention it either. My daughter says that this problem with asking

repeated questions has nothing to do with OCD,that she just really doesn't

understand and hates

math.She knows I am going to talk to her teacher and is now ok with her

knowing, just not her peers. Does anyone have this problem? Thank you in

Well, a little late reading this, you've probably already met with the teacher.

How did it go?

I was wondering if the teacher is staying with her after giving her the answer,

to see your dd solve the problem?

Needless to say, I am meeting with her teacher this evening to discuss this

Hi Nichole,

My 8 yr old son does this too. Does your daughter have a plan at school? My son

has an IEP, and I implemented a plan where the teacher has a list on my son's

desk with strategies he needs to ask himself before he asks the teacher a

question to which he always knows the answer.

Math disabilities are not understood at schools. Has your daughter had an IQ

test? My daughter had a deficit score in working memory and deficit in

processing speed. This means she can't remember the

next step or math facts. The school just didn't not understand this

at all. The neuropsychologist explained the LD to the school

they still insisted she could do the work. Finally our daughter's

therapist (that undersood well neuropschological reports) told the

school plainly she needs to be in a special ed math class even

though she tested (on state tests at above grade level).

She just has too much anxiety about math and it is based on real

cognitive deficits.

My daughter was 9 years old when I had the full neuropsychologcial

test done at our expense.

It was worth the money. It opended up a lot of services

for her based on need.
