Oprah tangled in $1 trillion lawsuit

In the entertainment business, it seems hardly a week goes by when someone's

suing a celebrity for thousands of dollars. A half-a-million lawsuit could

prompt a raised eyebrow; anything over a million could prompt two.

But Oprah Winfrey's latest legal battle just has me staring open-mouthed at my

computer screen. Author Damon Lloyd Goffe is suing the talk show doyenne for $1

trillion dollars. Let me let that sink in. One. Trillion. Dollars.

Goffe alleges that Winfrey and her production company, Harpo Inc., plagiarised

his book A Tome of Poetry in her Internet-published work Pieces of my Soul, says

World Entertainment News Network.

Goffe's copyright infringement suit also says Winfrey admitted she used his

original works in 2008, according to the National Enquirer: " In April 2008 Oprah

confessed to seizing original works of authorship. "

And since Winfrey sold an alleged 650 million copies of the book online for $20

each (£13), she owes Goffe $1.2 trillion, says the suit filed at the District of

Columbia Court on July 31.

The website that sold Winfrey's work is no longer available, Goffe acknowledges.

A representative for Winfrey has not yet commented on the case.

This isn't the first time the media mogul has been sued – not by far. In March

2008, Darlene sued her over her show Oprah's Big Give, and the same month

another woman sued her for being injured in a rush for seats at The Oprah

Winfrey Show.

And perhaps most notably, late last year the former headmistress of Oprah

Winfrey's South African Leadership Academy for Girls sued her for defamation.
