Guest guest
Any medication can cause an allergic reaction that would include a itching. It's odd that she doesn't have a rash or nausea, but I think any doctor or pharmacist would recommend that she stop taking it. You can give her a dose of Benadryl that should stop the anxiety and it may calm her too for a bit. Agree that doctors may be well meaning, but sometimes just don't get it. To top that, they can be arrogant enough to not reach out to other physicians and not to think that perhaps that have a patient who doesn't respond like the literature says that they should. It's very frustrating and depressing I know. There are doctors and therapists who can make a different though and sometimes it is the child's maturation that helps make a difference. I hope things get better for you soon. Bonnie > > My daughter switched from Paxil to liquid fluoxetine. She took the first dose of the liquid fluoxetine this morning and she has had intense itching off and on all day today. The itching is in various places (generalized) and she does not have a rash. In the past, she tried regular fluoxetine (not liquid) and didn't have itching like this. Does anyone know if Prozac/fluoxetine can cause itching? > > It's driving me crazy because every single day there's an issue of some kind. Today it's the itching and of course, the anxiety and tears. I can't get any peace and my own depression (and OCD) is really bad right now. And of course, she gets no peace, either. I don't feel that the doctors are any help at all. I feel like we are on our own and i am really and truly about to give up. I don't feel I can keep going like this much longer. I wish the doctors cared about my daughter the way I do - I wish they cared enough to really make an effort to think outside the box and find something to help her - but I guess that's unrealistic and just too much to hope for. Guest guest
I'd call your pharmacist too (this is the weekend) and her doctor. Since it's liquid, I think if the pharmacy can figure out what it is that she's allergic to, they can change it for her. I know I've read that compounding pharmacies can do this for many medications, where a typical ingredient used has to be changed due to allergy or causing some other bad effect, etc. For instance, those allegic to corn or wheat may need this done, as corn/wheat are in some medications (all those inactive ingredients or coatings, etc.) I guess Paxil was no help either? And now this reaction with this med. It's hard, I know, but do keep trying, it'll be better once she is on *the* medication that finally helps! And it might be Prozac, so hope the pharmacy can help with changing it for her. Let us know what happens! > > My daughter switched from Paxil to liquid fluoxetine. Guest guest
Hi -- I know you have gotten a number of responses so far, but I wanted to add that my son takes liquid fluoxetine and has never experienced itching. Just to say that it is not a side effect (for him) and more likely, as others have suggested, a possible sign of allergic reaction. Kathleen Help - can liquid fluoxetine(Prozac) cause intense itching? My daughter switched from Paxil to liquid fluoxetine. She took the first dose of the liquid fluoxetine this morning and she has had intense itching off and on all day today. The itching is in various places (generalized) and she does not have a rash. Guest guest
I just read a post of yours from the beginning of Feb. First, please don't give up. Things can get much better though it often takes time. From your other post it doesn't sound like you have tried many meds and most haven't gotten to a therapeutic level. My dd was unstable and struggled greatly for 3 years. She actually struggled longer than that but those 3 years were the absolute worst. I also felt like giving up. She was taking a combination of 7 meds at 1 point. She missed almost 3 years of high school. Her depressions were severe and she often couldn't get out of bed at all. But right now, she is a success story. She just finished her 1st semester of college and made the dean's list. She takes 5 meds and they are finally the right cocktail for her. She also has bipolar and asperger's. The anxiety was pretty much as severe as it can get. Last year, she went to Remuda Ranch for 60 days in their intensive inpatient hospitalization for anxiety program. She can function now. It is amazing. Please don't give up. Maybe this isn't the right doctor for her. Our pdoc had been wonderful. Her was compassionate and understanding but she remained very ill the entire time she had him. My dd has a new pdoc and she isn't as compassionate etc as he was, but my dd is doing well medically under her and that is most important. Good luck, Stormy ________________________________ To: Sent: Sat, February 27, 2010 10:14:33 PM Subject: Help - can liquid fluoxetine(Prozac) cause intense itching? Guest guest
Awesome success story, Stormy!!! Thank you for sharing that. When you are in the midst of chaos, it's natural to just want to give up, rnelson. I've been there too. But, how can you? The OCD will still continue whether you do or not, so you can't. <sigh> You went through the worst, Stormy, for a very long time, but it's a great encouragement for those who are struggling to see that your daughter found what was needed to get better. Guest guest
Stormy, I'm so glad she's still doing so well. I remember your posting about Remuda Ranch and how much it helped her. And remember her past before that. So YAY!! for her! A long road but seems she's at the other end of it! You too! > > I just read a post of yours from the beginning of Feb. Guest guest
Hi. Just wanted to comment that our son has experienced itching too. I've long suspected his Celexa could be contributing. It comes and goes, and certain things seem to set it off, like temperature changes. Showering can be a rough one when he is going through a bout of it. He already has sensitive skin that seems to be reactive, along with having eczema, so when the itching flares it especially tough. He can't use lotions because rubbing them in makes the itching worse. Benadryl does help, but makes him sleepy. He also gets in front of a fan when he gets out of the shower to try to cool his skin down. He says if he get too warm, or sweats, it can set it off too. He recently was on antibiotics for a double ear infection and sinus infection, along with severe vertigo. His itching was really bad. I called a pharmacist and found out the antibiotic he was on could cause itching, so we wondered if that caused the latest itching flare up. They suggested trying Benadryl spray that is sprayed topically on the skin, because it will not cause sleepiness. They also suggested trying something like Zyrtec. We got both, but never had to try them because it calmed back down. But, we are going to keep them on hand for the next time it flares up, since it's been doing this on an off for a few years now. Sometimes he will go weeks, or even months, with no problem, then it comes back. If it comes back, you could try some of the things that have worked for Josh. If you try the meds, you should make sure they are okay with her doctor first though. We've decided that if it is the Celexa causing, or contributing to the itching, that the benefits outweigh the side effects. His OCD, when it was out of control, made him nonfunctional. Hard decisions all around. <sigh> BJ > > My daughter switched from Paxil to liquid fluoxetine.
