I have been following fragile x research because glutamate dysregulation is

targeted in promising new treatments in that research arena. What is hopeful

with fragile X is that since they found the gene that causes it ( I think as

late as 1992) they can really target treatment. In OCD and other psych disorders

the genetic component is alot more complex and varied I think. At any rate

glutamate dysregulation has been the focus of recent research in OCD too, so I

just thought this might interest the group.

So an older drug called fenobam (an mglur5 anatagonist) is being trialed, and

also minocycline has been found to improve symptoms related to fragile X, which

include sensory dysfunction and obsessionality.

A long time ago when my oldest daughter's symptoms with skin picking became

difficult around age 11(she is now 21) I thought a dermatologist vist might help

and she was precribed minocycline. I always thought that drug improved her mood

and reduced her skin picking! I really thought it had a therapeutic effect that

was not just related to skin care. But you never know b/c sometimes a treatment

can have a placebo effect, esp if it is one the patient prefers to try (my dd

never liked trying psych drugs). We discontinued it in part b/c it was hard for

her to avoid sun exposure during school. And of course it was prescribed for

controlling outbreaks (of which hers were very minor, with a BDD component)not

for OCD. Anyway, I am wondering if these fragile X drugs can have any potential

to help in OCD too.
